What does one study when one undertakes the formal study of philosophy? Is philosophy merely the wistful reflection upon one’s current situation in life, or have philosophers done something more (and continue to!)? Moreover, if philosophical inquiry is considered one of the hallmarks of being human, has India contributed anything to this scholastic endeavour? And finally, does philosophy (Indian or otherwise) have any value in our increasingly practical, technology-riddled world today? In this talk, I shall reflect on these and other questions and consider also the importance of the related study of history and languages in modern academia.
