Integrated Master of Science

The Integrated Master of Science in Life Sciences programme aims to impart a sound understanding of the basics in life sciences, an aptitude for research, and ability to undertake diverse and challenging career opportunities in industry and academia. Our objective is to provide research education in life sciences at an early stage, in order to inculcate an interest in scientific and industrial innovation.

The Integrated Master of Science in life sciences introduces students to the basic areas of biology as cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology and later in certain specialised branches of biology such as cancer biology, nanotechnology, research methodology, recombinant DNA technology and bioinformatics. The laboratory courses will introduce students to research methods in biology and the 18 months long Master’s thesis will help them to pursue. their research in an area of their interest. Students wanting to pursue their career in industry can substitute credits with an extended industry internship or an industry project. Our unique hands on pedagogy trains students to think outside of biology and try to solve a problem from a multi-disciplinary perspectives to become well-rounded scientists. Students can also pursue alternative career opportunities like entrepreneurship, science management, scientific writing as well as in the field of data science.

The programme admits:

  • Students with Biology, Physics, Chemistry subjects in the 12th standard
Admission Eligibility - The Integrated Master of Science in Life Sciences programme is open to anyone who has completed class 12 or equivalent with Biology, Physics and Chemistry – all three subjects being required.
  • Students without Biology/Chemistry/Physics as a subject in the 12th standard
Candidates who do not have one or more of these subjects at class 12, will have to take prescribed MOOC Courses in one or more subjects out of Biology/Chemistry/Physics (whichever were not at her plus two-level) and achieve a satisfactory grade in those courses as prescribed by the University. The student can then apply for a Major in Life Sciences. Credits or Grades obtained in the above referred MOOC (qualifying exams) courses will not appear in the University transcripts.
For the above category of students, over and above the subject specific MOOC Courses, the University may also insist on clearing its own Diagnostic Test, in the corresponding subject(s) (up to class 12 level Biology and/or Physics and/or Chemistry of the CBSE level) to be conducted in June every year. Based on the scores/grades of the candidate, a committee constituted by the university may approve the admission to the major. The committee may also suggest a few extra courses to the candidate based on the performance.
