The BCom (Honours) programme provides an education in commerce with focus on accounting within the context of an interdisciplinary education. The programme is designed to develop a holistic perspective on commerce and thus equip students with an understanding of modern, sustainable business milieus. With the adoption of advanced technology, there has been a paradigm shift in the field of accounting and its allied areas where, in addition to being knowledgeable in accounting practices, an accounting professional needs to be a skilled communicator, able to ethically apply accounting processes and to integrate them with technology. The unique design of the School Core and the General Education Requirement at Ahmedabad University will allow students to take courses in accounting along with wide array of elective courses which include marketing, finance, operations, human resource, supply chain, ethics and law, business analytics and organization behaviour.
The programme is designed to prepare competent accounting professionals who can work in an increasingly complex environment with the help of the broad knowledge of business. Students learn various facets of financial accounting, cost and management accounting, auditing, business and personal taxation, financial statement analysis, along with broad understanding of the different dimensions of finance, including financial management, banking, financial markets and services. The programme will help students understand the changing accounting paradigm due to technological advancements, increasing number of Indian companies having global footprints, new evolving taxation regime and compliance standards. This programme makes students future ready accounting professionals who are able to think strategically, communicate effectively, and are digitally oriented.
The choice-based credit system at Ahmedabad University and the flexibility in the programme enables students to pursue the Major in Accounting while also gaining exposure to other fields through twenty plus Minors offered from across the School of Management, the School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Engineering and Applied Science.
With a blend of theory and the practical applications of accounting within the corporate and legal framework the programme prepares students for not only graduate education at reputed institutions both in India and globally but also for meaningful employment with some of the leading accounting firms of the country and abroad, as well as in manufacturing and service industries, government, and not-for-profit organizations.
Ahmedabad University has a MoU with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), UK which facilitates the pursuit of a global qualification, ACCA, along with the BCom degree. On this track, students receive the privilege of an exemption for 9 out of 13 papers required for ACCA certification for having completed certain coursework at Ahmedabad University. The curriculum for the exempted papers is embedded in our curriculum and students can complete the remaining 4 out of a total of 13 papers concurrently with their undergraduate degree. Over 150 students have enrolled in ACCA with Ahmedabad University and are pursuing rewarding careers in the fields of accountancy, finance, and management, both in India and globally. The ACCA qualification will not only give students an option to pursue an international qualification but also open up the best employment opportunities for them both in India as well as abroad.
The Programme admits students who have completed Class 12 or equivalent in any discipline and have the passion for their chosen major. Some majors may require prior preparation in certain areas. Please check the section on Majors.
