About us

Foundation Programme

The Foundation Programme is a core component of the undergraduate curriculum at Ahmedabad University, undertaken by all first-year students. It consists of three intensive, four-week interdisciplinary Studio courses on Democracy and Justice, Environment and Climate Change, and Water.

These Studios are designed to introduce students to university-level inquiry through interdisciplinary perspectives, experiential learning, and critical reflection. Learning takes place through a combination of lectures, discussions, collaborative studio work, and field-based or activity-driven engagements.

For each Studio, we seek Teaching Assistants who are deeply invested in teaching and learning, curious about engaging with ideas across disciplines, and motivated to support students as they encounter unfamiliar concepts, methods, and ways of thinking.

Role Summary

Teaching Assistants / Studio Associates play a central role in shaping students’ learning experiences within the Foundation Programme Studios. Working closely with faculty coordinators, TAs support both the intellectual and pedagogic dimensions of the courses.

While morning sessions are typically led by faculty through lectures and discussions, Teaching Assistants are expected to actively engage in these sessions and then take a lead role in facilitating afternoon studio activities. This includes helping students translate theoretical ideas into practice, supporting collaborative learning, and fostering inclusive and reflective classroom environments.

This position is particularly suited to individuals who see teaching and mentorship as a shared learning process and who enjoy working in interdisciplinary academic settings.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with faculty members in designing, adapting, and refining course materials to support student learning
  • Facilitate and guide students during studio-based, discussion-oriented, and activity-driven sessions
  • Observe student engagement and learning processes, identify conceptual or skill-based gaps, and support students through timely feedback and discussion
  • Assist in the coordination, evaluation, and assessment of assignments, presentations, projects, and class participation
  • Support inclusive and respectful classroom and studio environments
  • Track student progress and communicate observations to faculty, following up where academic or pedagogic support is required
  • Maintain daily attendance and participation records
  • Contribute to other academic and pedagogic tasks as assigned by faculty coordinators

Key Skills

  • A demonstrated interest in teaching, facilitation, and undergraduate learning
  • Comfort working with ideas, texts, and methods from multiple disciplines
  • Ability to engage patiently and constructively with students from diverse academic backgrounds

Postdoctoral Fellow, School of Arts and Sciences

Conduct experimental research, analyse data, write and publish manuscripts, write and apply for research grants and mentor PhD and undergraduate students.

Reporting to: Professor Ashim Rai

Duration: 36 months

Role Summary: Professor Ashim Rai’s lab in the Division of Biological and Life Sciences at Ahmedabad University is looking for a motivated and self-driven postdoctoral fellow to work on biophysics of Salmonella-host cytoskeleton interactions. The research project would be directed towards understanding the biophysical molecular mimicry mechanisms used by Salmonella pathogenic factors to hijack host cell cytoskeletal networks. The ideal candidate would have a PhD degree in biochemistry or biophysics and an experience in cytoskeletal biology would be highly desirable. The candidate would be expected to work using interdisciplinary methods that span reconstitution biology, fluorescence spectroscopy and DNA nanotechnology. An experience in fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy is essential.

Project Associate, School of Arts and Sciences

Role Summary: The Astronomy and Astrophysics group at Ahmedabad University is accepting applications for the position of a Project Associate to work on a project titled “Study of Interstellar medium filaments detection algorithms and application on the Galactic plane TeraHertz surveys”. The Project Associate would work towards carrying out a detailed comparative study of existing algorithms for identifying Interstellar medium (ISM) filamentary structures by applying them to relevant data products (Thz and multi-wavelength data sets), with the help of HPC operation. The project is crucial for developing future data analysis tools for ISM, and answering fundamental questions associated with star formation. The Project Associate will work with Professor Samyaday Choudhury and scientists at the Space Applications Centre (SAC-ISRO, Ahmedabad). Junior Research Fellow (JRF), School of Engineering and Applied Science

Reporting to: Jayendra M Bhalodiya, Assistant Professor, School of Engineering and Applied Science

Duration: 3 years

Role Summary: AI Tool for Tumour Segmentation, Characterisation and Diagnosis. The role requires expertise in Python, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and image processing. Moreover, the candidate should have willingness to learn medical image analysis, tumour characterisation and diagnosis. The candidate must have a demonstrable project using at least U-Net for image segmentation.

Responsibilities: JRF will be responsible to develop a novel deep learning-based image segmentation methods by extending transformer-based architectures such as Swin U-Net. Research Assistant, School of Arts and Sciences

This position is under the Indo-German collaborative project “Advancing Piezoelectric Material Systems for Non-Invasive Internal Pressure Sensing in Healthcare,” which develops biodegradable PLLA/BaTiO3 hybrid piezoelectric materials, studies resonance behavior under ultrasound and strain, and builds proof-of-concept sensor systems for biomedical monitoring in collaboration with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and optimize PLLA and related hybrid materials/ thin films through room-temperature fabrication processes.
  • Investigate nanoparticle dispersion, interfacial coupling, crystallinity, morphology, and processing parameters for improved piezoelectric performance.
  • Carry out various material and electrical characterizations (SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, DSC, PFM).
  • Fabricate simple thin-film pressure sensors, support electrode deposition and sensor integration, and participate in experiments using in-house setups.

Role Summary

  • Support community screening and identification of the study participants.

Job Description: We are seeking a motivated and skilled Junior Research Fellow to join our team for an exciting project focused on understanding sensory plasticity in green chromides. The project involves doing field work in natural habitats of the green chromides and understanding the molecular mechanisms driving the visual performance of the fishes under the given environment. 

Key responsibilities

  • Develop primers targeting the visual genes in the green chromides.
  • Standardise and conduct qPCR methods on analysing the expression of several visual genes.
  • Bioinformatic analyses of transcriptome sequencing data
  • Conduct field work in different freshwater habitats within India
  • Standardise and conduct behavioural experiments, both in the field and under laboratory conditions, to understand visual performance of the green chromides under a given environment.
  • Standardise the protocol for measuring several abiotic parameters in the field for evaluating the quality of the habitat

Research Summary: This project focuses on zero-sum problems in additive combinatorics, which investigate conditions under which sequences or subsets of finite groups contain zero-sum subsequences. The study involves important combinatorial invariants such as the Davenport constant, the Erdős–Ginzburg–Ziv theorem, and related weighted and restricted zero-sum problems. Modern approaches combine combinatorial, algebraic, polynomial, and graph-theoretic techniques to analyse subsequence sums, sumsets, and extremal structures in finite abelian groups.

Role: The Junior Research Fellow (JRF) will work under the guidance of Professor Eshita Mazumdar on a research project funded by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), focused on Combinatorial Number Theory.   • Experience in experimental data analysis, scientific writing, and maintaining laboratory records; proficiency in Origin, MATLAB, Python, or similar data analysis tools is desirable.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.

Duration: 9 months from the date of joining

Role Summary: Professor Indrajit Ghosh’s research group in the Bagchi School of Public Health at Ahmedabad University seeks motivated, self-driven project research associates to work on measles transmission patterns in India and Uganda. The research project would be directed towards understanding the dynamics of measles transmission under different migration patterns. One of the project research associates will work closely with Ms Robinah Nalwanga at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). The ideal candidates would have a Master’s degree in applied mathematics, data science, public health, or a related area. The candidate would be expected to perform spatiotemporal data analysis and to simulate compartmental disease models. The location of the research work is flexible and may be discussed during interview.

Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct numerical experiments in measles data analysis
  • Search for data related to measles transmission in subnational India and Uganda
  • Establishment of a reproducible workflow
  • Documentation of research and project activities

Key Skills

  • Experience in quantitative data analysis is required
  • Experience in Python/ R / MATLAB simulation is essential
  • Experience in mathematical modelling using compartmental models is highly desirable

Qualification: Master’s degree in applied mathematics, data science, public health, or a related area.
