About us

Foundation Programme

Undergraduate students go through a Foundation Programme in their first year. This includes three interdisciplinary and immersive 4-week courses in the Studio format, referred to as Thematic Studios, on Democracy and Justice, Environment and Climate Change, and Water. For each of these Studios we seek Teaching Assistants.

Role Summary

The Teaching Assistants/ Studio Associates for the Foundation Programme will support the teaching-learning activities at the Foundation Programme Studios. On most days, the learning in the mornings will be via lectures and discussions, which the faculty will lead, while the Teaching Assistants will coordinate the activities in the afternoon. Teaching Assistants are required to attend the morning sessions and coordinate the afternoon sessions. 

Responsibilities

  • Assist the faculty members in developing/improving the course material, as needed.
  • Guide the students during the activities’ sessions
  • Identify the learning gap in students and facilitate the interactions for a better understanding of the concepts/course requirements
  • Assist the faculty members in managing and assessing the evaluation components like assignments/presentations, class participation and projects
  • Support the faculty members in classroom management
  • Inform the faculty members about the student's progress and follow it up in case of any action required
  • Keep a record of the attendance during the day
  • Any other tasks as assigned by the faculty members

Key Skills

  • Proficiency in English and effective communication skills
  • Must be learning enthusiasts and student friendly
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Some experience in college-level research, including knowledge of citing, referencing, and annotating.
  • Any prior experience/exposure to teaching is desirable

Postdoctoral Fellow, School of Arts and Sciences

Conduct experimental research, analyse data, write and publish manuscripts, write and apply for research grants and mentor PhD and undergraduate students.

Reporting to: Professor Ashim Rai

Duration: 36 months

Role Summary: Professor Ashim Rai’s lab in the Division of Biological and Life Sciences at Ahmedabad University is looking for a motivated and self-driven postdoctoral fellow to work on biophysics of Salmonella-host cytoskeleton interactions. The research project would be directed towards understanding the biophysical molecular mimicry mechanisms used by Salmonella pathogenic factors to hijack host cell cytoskeletal networks. The ideal candidate would have a PhD degree in biochemistry or biophysics and an experience in cytoskeletal biology would be highly desirable. The candidate would be expected to work using interdisciplinary methods that span reconstitution biology, fluorescence spectroscopy and DNA nanotechnology. An experience in fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy is essential.

Research Assistant, School of Engineering and Applied Science

Role Summary: The RA will work towards meeting the project objective (“Understand the complexities, challenges, and decision-making processes of students’ Interdisciplinary Education journeys concerning personalised end-of-graduation goals by involving students, teachers, curriculum designers, admissions officers, career development centre officers, and institutional leaders”). (S)he/They will work towards gathering the initial dataset towards the development of the SIJMS framework.

Project Associate, School of Arts and Sciences

Role Summary: The Astronomy and Astrophysics group at Ahmedabad University is accepting applications for the position of a Project Associate to work on a project titled “Study of Interstellar medium filaments detection algorithms and application on the Galactic plane TeraHertz surveys”. The Project Associate would work towards carrying out a detailed comparative study of existing algorithms for identifying Interstellar medium (ISM) filamentary structures by applying them to relevant data products (Thz and multi-wavelength data sets), with the help of HPC operation. The project is crucial for developing future data analysis tools for ISM, and answering fundamental questions associated with star formation. The Project Associate will work with Professor Samyaday Choudhury and scientists at the Space Applications Centre (SAC-ISRO, Ahmedabad). Strongly motivated candidates from all genders and diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Employ and explore various algorithms to identify ISM filamentary structure.
  • Conduct a comprehensive survey of THz and complementary data from various instruments, data compilation and preprocessing.

Junior Research Fellow (JRF), School of Engineering and Applied Science

Reporting to: Jayendra M Bhalodiya, Assistant Professor, School of Engineering and Applied Science

Duration: 3 years

Role Summary: AI Tool for Tumour Segmentation, Characterisation and Diagnosis. The role requires expertise in Python, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and image processing. Moreover, the candidate should have willingness to learn medical image analysis, tumour characterisation and diagnosis. The candidate must have a demonstrable project using at least U-Net for image segmentation.

Responsibilities: JRF will be responsible to develop a novel deep learning-based image segmentation methods by extending transformer-based architectures such as Swin U-Net. JRF will also be required to process image data and conduct experiments using GPU workstation and HPC facility. JRF will be required to report weekly progress to the project investigator and document the developed methods.

Key Skills: Python, artificial intelligence, computer vision, image processing, health data analytics, transformers.

Project Associate, School of Arts and Sciences

Reporting to: Soumen Ghosh, Assistant Professor, Mathematical and Physical Sciences division, School of Arts and Sciences under the project “Study of electron energy distribution on formation of double layer in expanding plasma”

Duration: August 1, 2025 - December 21, 2025

About the School of Arts and Sciences: The School of Arts and Sciences at Ahmedabad University currently works in different fields of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, including theoretical and experimental Physics, and other fields of Pure Mathematics, Applied Physics, and Statistics. The School of Arts and Sciences has other divisions in Biological and Life Sciences, Humanities and Languages, Performing and Visual Arts, and Social Sciences.

Role Summary: The project is sponsored by DST-SERB, India. The Project Associate - I will work at Plasma Physics Research Laboratory, School of Arts and Sciences, Ahmedabad University, to build an expanding radiofrequency plasma system to conduct experiments to study the electron/ion energy distributions and ion beam generation. The Project Associate - I will help to design and develop the system, use the in-house machine shop to build various components, procure equipment and other lab-related peripherals, help the students working in the lab, acquire data, participate in the discussion, and present the results at the conference.

Responsibilities

  • Design and set up laboratory experiments, procurement and maintenance of the equipment, making electronic circuits for the experiment, acquire data, write a progress report and a manuscript, and present the results at the conference.
  • Help the undergraduate and graduate students with their laboratory research.
  • Coordinate with the PI (Dr. Soumen Ghosh) for all the academic and research activities in the laboratory.

Essential Qualification: Candidates with a master’s degree in physics with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent grades are eligible for this position. Candidates with an interest in experimental research are encouraged to apply.

Desirable Key Skills

  • Prior experience of working with signal data acquisition and processing devices such as oscilloscope, function generator, MATLAB, LabView, etc, is desirable.
  • Candidates having working experience in experimental physics or electronics research projects or in a research laboratory are desirable.
  • Prior working experience with vacuum systems, pumps, and electromagnets is also useful.

Job Description: We are seeking a motivated and skilled Junior Research Fellow to join our team for an exciting project focused on understanding reproductive strategies of mugger crocodiles across diverse habitats within Gujarat. The project will involve extensive fieldwork and laboratory work on analyzing scat samples for measuring reproductive hormones.

Key responsibilities

  • Capture video footage of mugger crocodiles using drones.
  • Conduct long hours of fieldwork as a part of a team, both during day and night time, in mugger habitats to record behavioral observations and collect scat samples.
  • Conduct hormone assays to generate endocrine readouts for mugger populations

Junior Research Fellow, School of Arts and Sciences

Reporting to: Aditya Vaishya, Associate Professor, School of Arts and Sciences

Role Summary: The selected candidate will work on air quality assessment under an ISRO-funded project

Responsibilities: The research fellow will take part in the development of IoT-based air quality sensor devices, as well as deployment and data collection, mainly over the Himalayas. This is a lab and field-based work. It includes air quality assessment based on field observation and satellite data involving theoretical calculations.

Project duration: Initially, it will be one year; it can be extended to another six months based on the recommendation of a committee of experts who will review the performance of the candidate and the progress of project work. The position is co-terminus with the project.

Evaluation: A committee of experts will review the progress of project work. If the candidate's performance is found unsatisfactory, the candidate will be terminated from the position.

The selected candidate will be encouraged to enroll in the PhD programme in Physics at Ahmedabad University. Selection into the PhD programme is not automatic and is based on the candidate meeting the eligibility criteria and qualify the written and/or interview.

Research Fellow, School of Arts and Sciences

Role Summary: The selected candidate will work on an Ahmedabad University funded project entitled ‘Climate understanding of dengue spread in urban landscapes’.

Responsibilities: The Research Fellow will collect wild mosquito populations across the sites in Ahmedabad city. Upon collections mosquitoes will be transferred to the laboratory and managed under proper conditions. The Research Fellow will also conduct lab based analysis of the mosquitoes.

Key Skills

  • Collection of mosquitos from various locations
  • Preservation and identification of collected mosquito samples
  • Comfortable in molecular biology techniques (e.g. extraction of genomic material and PCR procedures)

Project Research Scientist, Bagchi School of Public Health

Role Summary: Professor Indrajit Ghosh’s research group in the Bagchi School of Public Health at Ahmedabad University is looking for a motivated and self-driven project research associate to work on mathematical modelling of measles transmission. The research project would be directed towards understanding the dynamics of measles transmission under different vaccination scenarios in subnational India. The project research scientist will work closely with the National Disease Modelling Consortium, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. The ideal candidate would have a PhD degree in applied mathematics and experience in infectious disease modelling would be highly desirable. The candidate would be expected to perform mathematical modelling and simulation of age-stratified compartmental models.
