Foundation Programme

The Foundation Programme is a core component of the undergraduate curriculum at Ahmedabad University, undertaken by all first-year students.  It consists of three intensive, four-week interdisciplinary Studio courses on Democracy and Justice, Environment and Climate Change, and Water.

These Studios are designed to introduce students to university-level inquiry through interdisciplinary perspectives, experiential learning, and critical reflection.  Learning takes place through a combination of lectures, discussions, collaborative studio work, and field-based or activity-driven engagements.

For each Studio, we seek Teaching Assistants who are deeply invested in teaching and learning, curious about engaging with ideas across disciplines, and motivated to support students as they encounter unfamiliar concepts, methods, and ways of thinking.

Role Summary: Teaching Assistants/ Studio Associates play a central role in shaping students’ learning experiences within the Foundation Programme Studios. Working closely with faculty coordinators, the Teaching Assistants support both the intellectual and pedagogic dimensions of the courses.While morning sessions are typically led by faculty through lectures and discussions, the Teaching Assistants are expected to actively engage in these sessions and then take a lead role in facilitating afternoon studio activities. This includes helping students translate theoretical ideas into practice, supporting collaborative learning, and fostering inclusive and reflective classroom environments.  This position is particularly suited for individuals who see teaching and mentorship as a shared learning process and who enjoy working in interdisciplinary academic settings.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with faculty members in designing, adapting, and refining course materials to support student learning
  • Facilitate and guide students during studio-based, discussion-oriented, and activity-driven sessions.
  • Observe student engagement and learning processes, identify conceptual or skill-based gaps, and support students through timely feedback and discussion
  • Assist in the coordination, evaluation, and assessment of assignments, presentations, projects, and class participation
  • Support inclusive and respectful classroom and studio environments
  • Track student progress and communicate observations to faculty, following up where academic or pedagogic support is required
  • Maintain daily attendance and participation records
  • Contribute to other academic and pedagogic tasks as assigned by faculty coordinators

  • Comfort working with ideas, texts, and methods from multiple disciplines

First Year Interdisciplinary Seminar on Critical Thinking and Writing (FYIS)

The First Year Interdisciplinary Seminar on Critical Thinking and Writing (FYIS) is a core component of the undergraduate curriculum at Ahmedabad University and is undertaken by all first-year students across majors. The Seminar is designed to support students’ transition into university-level learning by strengthening their critical reading, writing, and thinking skills through interdisciplinary inquiry.

Each Seminar engages students with carefully selected texts, ideas, and problems drawn from diverse disciplines. Learning takes place through close reading, structured discussions, writing workshops, peer review, and reflective assignments. The emphasis is on developing students’ ability to read analytically, write clearly and persuasively, and engage thoughtfully with arguments.

For each First Year Seminar, we seek Teaching Assistants who are deeply invested in teaching and learning, enjoy working closely with student writing, and are attentive to how students develop ideas across drafts. We are particularly interested in applicants who appreciate interdisciplinary learning and are motivated to guide students through the intellectual and ethical demands of academic writing, including the responsible use of generative AI tools.

Role Summary

Teaching Assistants play a central role in supporting students’ learning experiences within the FYIS.  Working closely with faculty members, TAs contribute to both the intellectual and pedagogic dimensions of the course, with a particular focus on reading, writing, and providing feedback.

While faculty typically lead core discussions and lectures, Teaching Assistants are expected to actively participate in these sessions and take a lead role in facilitating small-group discussions and reading of the assigned material. This includes helping students interpret complex texts, develop arguments, revise written work, and reflect on feedback.

This position is particularly suited for individuals who view teaching, writing, and mentorship as iterative and collaborative learning processes, and who are interested in undergraduate pedagogy within interdisciplinary academic settings.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with faculty members in designing, adapting, and refining reading materials, writing prompts, and assessment rubrics to support student learning
  • Facilitate and guide students during discussion-based classes, writing workshops, and peer-review sessions
  • Support students through the process of planning, drafting, revising, and editing college-level written assignments and essays

Postdoctoral Fellow, School of Arts and Sciences

Conduct experimental research, analyse data, write and publish manuscripts, write and apply for research grants and mentor PhD and undergraduate students.

Reporting to: Professor Ashim Rai

Duration: 36 months

Role Summary: Professor Ashim Rai’s lab in the Division of Biological and Life Sciences at Ahmedabad University is looking for a motivated and self-driven postdoctoral fellow to work on biophysics of Salmonella-host cytoskeleton interactions. The research project would be directed towards understanding the biophysical molecular mimicry mechanisms used by Salmonella pathogenic factors to hijack host cell cytoskeletal networks. The ideal candidate would have a PhD degree in biochemistry or biophysics and an experience in cytoskeletal biology would be highly desirable. The candidate would be expected to work using interdisciplinary methods that span reconstitution biology, fluorescence spectroscopy and DNA nanotechnology. An experience in fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy is essential.

Research Associate, School of Arts and Sciences

Reporting to: Subhash Rajpurohit, Associate Professor, Biological and Life Sciences division, School of Arts and Sciences

Duration: 2 years

Role Summary: The Research Associate (RA) will take a lead on a Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission, Government of Gujarat funded project and do the project related work only. The major duties will involve conducting experiments, analyse data, write and publish manuscripts, write and apply for research grants and mentor PhD and undergraduate students.

Responsibilities: Maintenance of various genetic lines, measuring various life-history and stress traits, isolation of genetic material, functional characterization of genes, and editing genes. The candidate should be extremely good in molecular biology techniques and bioinformatics.

Role Summary: The RA will work towards meeting the project objective (“Understand the complexities, challenges, and decision-making processes of students’ Interdisciplinary Education journeys concerning personalized end-of-graduation goals by involving students, teachers, curriculum designers, admissions officers, career development centre officers, and institutional leaders”). The candidate will work towards gathering the initial dataset towards the development of the SIJMS framework.

Role Summary: The Astronomy and Astrophysics group at Ahmedabad University is accepting applications for the position of a Project Associate to work on a project titled “Study of Interstellar medium filaments detection algorithms and application on the Galactic plane TeraHertz surveys”. The Project Associate would work towards carrying out a detailed comparative study of existing algorithms for identifying Interstellar medium (ISM) filamentary structures by applying them to relevant data products (Thz and multi-wavelength data sets), with the help of HPC operation. The project is crucial for developing future data analysis tools for ISM, and answering fundamental questions associated with star formation. The Project Associate will work with Professor Samyaday Choudhury and scientists at the Space Applications Centre (SAC-ISRO, Ahmedabad).   • Employ and explore various algorithms to identify ISM filamentary structure.
  • Conduct a comprehensive survey of THz and complementary data from various instruments, data compilation and preprocessing.

Junior Research Fellow (JRF), School of Engineering and Applied Science

Reporting to: Jayendra M Bhalodiya, Assistant Professor, School of Engineering and Applied Science

Duration: 3 years

Role Summary: AI Tool for Tumour Segmentation, Characterisation and Diagnosis. The role requires expertise in Python, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and image processing. Moreover, the candidate should have willingness to learn medical image analysis, tumour characterisation and diagnosis. The candidate must have a demonstrable project using at least U-Net for image segmentation.

Responsibilities: JRF will be responsible to develop a novel deep learning-based image segmentation methods by extending transformer-based architectures such as Swin U-Net. JRF will also be required to process image data and conduct experiments using GPU workstation and HPC facility. JRF will be required to report weekly progress to the project investigator and document the developed methods.

Project Associate, School of Arts and Sciences

Reporting to: Soumen Ghosh, Assistant Professor, Mathematical and Physical Sciences division, School of Arts and Sciences under the project “Study of electron energy distribution on formation of double layer in expanding plasma”

Duration: August 1, 2025 - December 21, 2025

About the School of Arts and Sciences: The School of Arts and Sciences at Ahmedabad University currently works in different fields of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, including theoretical and experimental Physics, and other fields of Pure Mathematics, Applied Physics, and Statistics. The School of Arts and Sciences has other divisions in Biological and Life Sciences, Humanities and Languages, Performing and Visual Arts, and Social Sciences.

Role Summary: The project is sponsored by DST-SERB, India. The Project Associate - I will work at Plasma Physics Research Laboratory, School of Arts and Sciences, Ahmedabad University, to build an expanding radiofrequency plasma system to conduct experiments to study the electron/ion energy distributions and ion beam generation. The Project Associate - I will help to design and develop the system, use the in-house machine shop to build various components, procure equipment and other lab-related peripherals, help the students working in the lab, acquire data, participate in the discussion, and present the results at the conference.

Responsibilities

  • Design and set up laboratory experiments, procurement and maintenance of the equipment, making electronic circuits for the experiment, acquire data, write a progress report and a manuscript, and present the results at the conference.
  • Help the undergraduate and graduate students with their laboratory research.
  • Coordinate with the PI (Dr. Soumen Ghosh) for all the academic and research activities in the laboratory.

Essential Qualification: Candidates with a master’s degree in physics with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent grades are eligible for this position. Candidates with an interest in experimental research are encouraged to apply.

Desirable Key Skills

  • Prior experience of working with signal data acquisition and processing devices such as oscilloscope, function generator, MATLAB, LabView, etc, is desirable.
  • Candidates having working experience in experimental physics or electronics research projects or in a research laboratory are desirable.
  • Prior working experience with vacuum systems, pumps, and electromagnets is also useful.

Role Summary: The selected candidate will work on air quality assessment under an ISRO-funded project

Responsibilities: The research fellow will take part in the development of IoT-based air quality sensor devices, as well as deployment and data collection, mainly over the Himalayas. This is a lab and field-based work. It includes air quality assessment based on field observation and satellite data involving theoretical calculations.
