A Minor allows students to explore areas, other than a student’s Major area, of interest and build alternative areas of expertise. Many students are interested in more than one area and wish to build competencies in them of simply grow their interest for life long learning. Often, areas have complementary learning and career opportunities. A student desirous of building a pharmaceutical plant post-graduation may want to take a major in life sciences and a minor in operations management or even general engineering or vice-versa. Some other may be doing a major in Chemical and Environmental Engineering but may have a love for world history and may want to explore a minor in history to grow their love for life-long learning in that area. Another student majoring in Physics may develop an interest to work an investment bank and may want to complete a minor in Finance.
A student can take a Minor in any area designated as a Minor at any School or Centre of the University. A Minor area cannot be the same as the major area or in a related area. Some Minors may also have specific pre-requisites. The University permits students to take more than one minor.
A Minor requires completion of 18 credits as specified by the requirements of the minor. Free Electives can be used along with some courses from the Major Requirements and GERs towards a Minor. For instance, a student majoring in a management discipline and wanting to minor in Economics, will already have taken Microeconomics and Macroeconomics as part of their School core requirement. They simply need to take the remaining minor requirements as part of their GERs or Free Electives to complete the minor.
Academic Advising will be done by Programme Chairs and Major Advisors for various minors.
A Minor in Accounting provides fundamentals of the discipline and its applications. Such flexibility helps students graduate with a Major in their chosen field based on their career goals while also building interest and expertise in Accounting.
This Minor is open to students from all majors across the University except those in the Accounting, Accounting and Finance, and Finance majors.

A Minor in design introduces the design field and its interdisciplinary applications in industry and society. Minoring in design is expected to rouse students’ interest and diversify their studies to incorporate design skills and thinking into their academic experiences.
The intent is to give students enrolled in any programme at the university to discover, learn, follow and apply basic fundamental design - approaches, concepts, principles, methods and processes that serve as a framework or toolbox for stimulating creativity and methodology to identify, define and solve problems.
The minor provides the student with an understanding of human needs and re-framing the problem in human-centric ways. It gives an overview of the critical design thinking used for problem identification and opportunity mapping in any given context. Students will learn to recognise that design is exploratory in nature and helps navigate ambiguity. It adopts a hands-on approach to prototyping, testing and problem-solving.
Understanding design will empower anyone to apply the methods to tackle and solve complex problems. To use creative and innovative techniques to build better; products, services, systems, processes, strategies, and experiences that meet existing or previously unidentified real-world needs.
Importantly, it will add a richer and more diverse perspective to the student’s understanding of their field of Major education, be it management, technology, sciences, humanities or social sciences.
Structure of the Design Minor
The Design Minor is open to students admitted to any Undergraduate programme at the University. For a Minor in Design, the student must complete an 18-credit programme consisting of:

This Minor in General Engineering is open for students who are admitted to any programme at the University except those in the Bachelor of Technology majors. This Minor gives a broad exposure to fundamentals of engineering as well as a hands-on exposure to engineering skills. The minor core has two parts, one on fundamental engineering sciences related to energy, electricity, magnetism, and materials, and the other on engineering skills of design, making, and innovation. Use of contemporary software tools is integrated into the courses. Courses are oriented towards doing and making in a way that ties in ideas from computing, digital systems, design, and manufacturing fundamentals. Examples are drawn from applications rooted in the world around us. Aspects of sustainability, environmental issues, and societal impact are illustrated extensively. Besides providing an ability to appreciate basics of applications in systems and devices during their careers, the students during their study at the university will be able to collaborate meaningfully with engineering students on projects and co-curricular activities, such as, capstone projects and start-ups. The programme requires a prior study of basic courses in Mathematics at the university (e.g. MAT283, etc.).

A Minor in History provides fundamentals of the discipline and its applications. Such a flexibility will help students graduate with a Major in their chosen field based on their career goals and also build interest and expertise in History.
This Minor is open to students from all majors across the University except those in the History and PHL majors.
The goal of the Minor in History at the School of Arts and Sciences, Ahmedabad University, is to offer students a broad overview of the discipline of history. It introduces students to thinking historically, that is to say it teaches them to understand and explain changes over time. Another significant aspect of the minor in history is to help students acquire a global perspective and navigate the complexity of an ever-changing world. The minor in history rigorously trains students in research and communication methods, and other core skills in information management and critical thinking. It familiarizes them with a variety of sub-disciplines in history (intellectual history, history of empires, oceanic histories, for example). History, being inherently interdisciplinary, supports students in the minor to succeed in their major and beyond.
This minor is open to all students who have been admitted to any programme at Ahmedabad University, except those majoring in History (HST) and Philosophy, History and Languages (PHL).
Students must take at least one course from each of the 3 Core clusters listed below. They may select the remaining 3 courses (from the HST core or HST electives list) based on their interest.

More than half the world's population now lives in cities. India will lead the next phase of global urbanisation, adding 416 million urban dwellers by 2050 (UN’s World Urbanization Prospects report). While this rapid growth promises economic opportunities, it also risks severe public health and environmental consequences without strong urban policies and governance. Indian cities must prepare for escalating environmental, climate, and infrastructure problems, including rising inequity, pollution, and limited capacities.
The Minor in 'Urban Futures' directly addresses these challenges. The unique programme draws on Ahmedabad University's interdisciplinary competencies to offer a holistic engagement with urban issues. By combining the hard sciences, social sciences, and management sciences, it aims to analyse contemporary urban problems and devise implementable strategies for better urban management and planning.
The 'Urban Futures' Minor is timely, aligning with the Indian government's focus on urban capacity building. The programme equips students with highly employable skills, including machine learning, GIS, and policy analysis, opening diverse career paths in government and private sectors.
The Minor will prepare students as urban practitioners equipped to address urbanisation's many challenges, and plan, design, and manage cities that are equitable and offer a decent quality of life.
Students will gain a strong theoretical understanding of urban complexities and hands-on experience with the management and planning of cities, all informed by good data.
The programme is relevant to students across different schools, with courses offered in urban economics, management, and planning, public health, environment, ecology and climate change, sociology, history and politics, and physical and natural sciences.
Programme Structure
The Minor will have three clusters of courses (i) an Introductory cluster (ii) a Methods cluster, and (iii) a Theory cluster. The Methods cluster courses will focus on spatial methods. Students will have to take at least one course from among the three clusters.
