9th Convocation of Ahmedabad University
At the 9th Convocation of Ahmedabad University held on November 9, 2019, 1105 students received degrees - 905 received Bachelor’s degree, 198 received Master’s degree and 2 received doctoral degree (in life sciences and engineering).
“If we focus on creating 1 million entrepreneurs in the country, who are each able to build a business with an enterprise value of Rs 15 crore over the next five years, then we can straight away add $2.2 trillion to our GDP! As you know, India is currently a $2.8 trillion economy. So adding another $2.2 trillion will comfortably take us to the $5 trillion mark by 2024”, said Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairperson and Managing Director of Biocon Limited in her Convocation Address to the students of Ahmedabad University. Speaking as the Chief Guest at the 9th Convocation Ceremony Dr Mazumdar Shaw exhorted the Class of 2019 to become job creators rather than job seekers especially for graduates of the city of Ahmedabad. She gave her own example of how by turning an entrepreneur, she was able to create thousands of both, direct and indirect jobs in lieu of the one job that she was seeking.
It was a memorable ceremony where the founder Chairman Board of Management and the member Board of Governors, Shri Prafull Anubhai conferred the degree to the students. Dr Kiran Mazumdar Shaw gave away the Gold Medals to the meritorious students. While speaking to the Class of 2019, the Shri Anubhai talked about how starting a University is an ‘act of faith and that Ahmedabad University’s journey has just begun even though it is 10 years old. Addressing the graduating students, he mentioned that one must engage with what one enjoys doing and at the end, he advised the young minds to be mindful at all times.
Addressing the gathering, Professor Chandra, the Vice Chancellor and Chairman, Board of Management, Ahmedabad University touched upon the three goals the University pursues assiduously. The first being, to build an institution that nurtures citizens to become inclusive and humane. Second, to remake education by developing an ability to engage with the context of learning. Third, to undertake cutting edge research on real challenges faced by society. He also spoke about the three significant academic initiatives that were undertaken last year, the emergence of School of Arts and Science with its five divisions, the design of our signature Foundation Programme for the first year undergraduate students and the establishment of the Graduate School with its Dean of Graduate School & Research.
