Mathematical and Physical Sciences

The School of Arts and Sciences at Ahmedabad University is seeking to appoint a small number of additional faculty members in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences division. Our current teaching and research base will include Physics, and all fields of Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics. Applications from those with expertise in the History of Mathematics, Science and Technology would also be welcome. (Applications for faculty positions in Chemistry will be sought at a later date.) At this stage, we are not defining areas of specialisation, but will in time move to clusters of expertise as the faculty develops. This is an exciting opportunity to join a fast-growing school in India in a dynamic new private university with a public ethos.

Applicants must already have a doctorate or postdoctoral fellowship (if the norm in the field) from an institution with international recognition. Appointees will be expected to engage in high-level research, to publish in their specialist field, to teach, guide and examine undergraduates, to seek opportunities to win external funding for their research, and to supervise and examine both Masters and Doctoral work. They must have an existing record of excellence and potential, commensurate with their appointment level and stage of career. They will be expected to provide evidence of excellence as demonstrated by publications in leading academic journals or a research project at an international level, an emerging record of scholarly accomplishments, presentations at significant conferences and examples of original forms of knowledge production.

Page from the Lilavati of Bhaskaracharya. A peacock stands on top of a pillar; seeing a snake approach a hole at a distance equal to three times the height of the pillar, the peacock descends at an angle. If the two beasts travel at equal speed, at how many hastas from the hole will the meeting of their paths occur? Mathematical Association of America.
