Ahmedabad University Engineering Students Selected for Google Summer of Code Programme

Engineering Students Selected for Google Summer of Code Programme

Zeel Rajodiya, BTech Class of 2026, and Aadya Chinubhai, BTech Class of 2024, students of Ahmedabad University's School of Engineering and Applied Science, have been selected as contributors for the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) programme. Zeel will develop an open-source project for JSON Schema, which offers a standardised, declarative language for describing and validating JSON data. Aadya will develop AI-based solutions for NumFOCUS, a programme administered by Google Mountain View, California. GSoC has been conceptualised by Google to enable university students to build confidence and gain valuable experience by participating in open-source development.

Zeel will create an interactive guide to facilitate quick and easy learning of the JSON Schema specification for new users under the direction of experienced mentors from Spain and Hungary. The learning will be imparted through practical examples, hands-on exercises, and step-by-step lessons on the best practices pertaining to the specification. A simple interface and built-in code editor will also help users understand and validate their JSON Schema and obtain instant feedback.

"The programme has the potential to shape my career, connect me with like-minded individuals, and provide me with invaluable experience in open-source software development. Despite my background in a vernacular medium school, the value system at Ahmedabad University enabled me to break the language barrier and achieve this milestone”, said Zeel.

Guided by mentors from the United Kingdom and France, Aadya will implement Artificial Intelligence (AI) deep learning-based time series clustering algorithms into the aeon library using TensorFlow. “Contributing to open-source projects like aeon has enhanced my coding skills and taught me the value of collaboration. I am excited at the prospect of developing software used by millions worldwide and making significant contributions to deep learning and time series analysis”, said Aadya.

The peer-to-peer learning culture accentuated by the University through its various student clubs has played an important role in Zeel’s achievement. Being a core member of the Programming Club at the University, he received consistent support from several senior students in his endeavour.

Aadya mentions that as a Computer Science and Engineering student at Ahmedabad University, advanced courses like Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Stochastic Processes, and Fundamentals of Computer Programming have helped him hone his technical skills. He also attributed his success to extensive support from the faculty and the programme’s rigorous curriculum.
