Neuropsychology of Navigation in Life

The popular AU-NASI lecture has resumed and the next lecture is about Neuropsychology of Navigation in Life. The lecture will be delivered by Professor C. R. Mukundan, Director, Institute of Behavioral Science, Gujarat Forensic Sciences University, Gandhinagar.
This lecture will discuss the concept of Behavior in detail. The behaviour is explained as a property of the brain and as its functional outcome, the most important of it is the complex motor programming, being used by each growing child from childhood to reach goals in life. One has to acquire skills, learn to employ the skills, anticipate the short and long term outcome of actions initiated, and pursue the goal, and even alter the goals based on the actual and anticipated outcome of one’s pursuits. This is a navigational effort that is carried out by each individual making use of his or her brain functions. But how does the brain learn to navigate in life? How does it acquire these skills? What entails this journey of life? Come, join us in this exciting lecture to find out the answers to these questions!
Emeritus Professor C. R. Mukundan, PhD, DM & SP, is a pioneer in Neuropsychology in India. He joined Gujarat Forensic Sciences University in the year 2013, as the first Emeritus Professor of the University and Director of the Institute of Behavioral Science. He was formerly a Professor and HOD in the Department of Clinical Psychology at the National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore. He had set up the first Clinical Neuropsychology facility in India at NIMHANS, Bangalore during 1975 -79, for testing brain dysfunction in patients with diseases of the brain. He also set up the first Cognitive Electrophysiological Laboratory at NIMHANS in 1979. He also set up facilities for evoked potential and event-related potential recordings, and computerized EEG analysis. He also developed the NIMHANS neuropsychology Battery of tests for testing brain dysfunction. He also started Neuropsychology as a speciality subject in M.Phil Clinical Psychology at NIMHANS, which led to Neuropsychology being accepted as a speciality subject in other clinical disciplines of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, and Neurosciences. 22 PhDs, 26 MPhils and several engineering research projects have been supervised by him during the course of his career at NIMHANS. He has over 78 (national & international) research publications and has authored 2 books, along with the contribution of chapters in several books. Professor Mukundan is a recipient of WHO fellowship in Mental Health and Neurosciences in 1983 and visited the United Kingdom for training in Electrophysiology and Neuropsychology along with being an Honorary member of New York Academy of Science, 1999. He was also a Member of International Neuropsychology Society 1998 – 2000 and is currently President of Neuropsychology Society of India.
