Music for Peace: Call of Manipur
In unsettled times, music and song are so often mediums that provide deeper understanding, help to build bridges, and help to heal. ‘Music for Peace - Call of Manipur’ presents two outstanding singers, Mangka Mayanglambam from Manipur, and Megha Dalton from Jharkhand, to bring to us their luminous art and message of peace: "When I Sing I Cry". This presentation is a collaboration between Ahmedabad University and Vishwagram, a pioneering volunteer-led organisation from Gujarat that has worked for several months in the conflict zones of Manipur to extend relief and rehabilitation particularly to children. The programme will include performances by both singers and accompanying folk musicians, and a discussion of the situation in Manipur.
The Artistes
Mangka Mayanglambam is an award-winning performer, teacher, and researcher of Manipuri folk music. A much-respected singer, dancer, and player of the pena, a single-string lute, Mangka, as she is popularly known, is associated with the Laihui Ensemble, which seeks to preserve the teaching and practice of traditional Manipuri performing arts. She has performed across India and the world, including Japan, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar.
Megha Dalton is a greatly accomplished singer and composer from Daltonganj in Jharkhand. She has an extensive discography as a folk singer with proud ‘Jharkhandi’ roots. Megha’s wide range is evidenced in her work in theatre as well as performances in Coke Studio sessions. She is also a sought-after playback singer in movies, including the Tamil, Telugu, and ‘Bombay’ industries. A standout early musical performance was in Anurag Kashyap’s That Girl in Yellow Boots.
