As the glaciers are retreating, mountain peaks are without snow cover, water sources are drying out at an alarming rate, new vector and water-borne diseases are rampant, pasture and fields are arid and food production is on the steep decline in the Himalayas. Climate and environmental changes in the region have increased the frequency and severity of extreme weather events in the region, including Lo Mustang, which has altered montane ecology beyond restoration. This presentation highlights the ‘lived experiences’ of the Lowa people and my documentation of the ‘ground realities’ of witnessing the ‘changes’ firsthand for more than 15 years in the region, trying to understand and represent the tremendous pressure for transformation.

Fidel Devkota
Fidel Devkota is a Nepali Filmmaker and Visual Anthropologist based in Berlin and Kathmandu. He holds a BFS in Film Studies, an MA, and a PhD in Visual Media Anthropology. He is presently faculty at Kathmandu University, doing independent research as a visual/environmental anthropologist in the Himalayas. His work is mainly focused on the impact of climatic and environmental changes and their implications for local populations in the Himalayas. His broader interests in the Himalayan region include environmental and climate anthropology, visual media anthropology, digital anthropology, applied anthropology, Tibetan Studies, Himalayan Studies, film and media studies, photography, and film production.
