Global Potential of Solar Rooftop

Rooftop solar photovoltaics currently account for 42% of the global solar photovoltaics installed capacity. Being decentralised in nature, rooftop solar PV technology can lead to a consumer-driven breakthrough in tackling climate change, reducing local air pollution, accelerating development, and providing affordable energy access to areas lacking electrification. Yet, only limited information is available on its global potential and associated costs at a high spatiotemporal resolution. The speaker will present a global assessment of the rooftop solar PV’s electricity generation potential at a high spatial and temporal resolution using a novel methodology that utilises big data, machine learning and planetary-scale cloud computing.
