Close the Gap: Cancer Prevention and Screening
Cancer is a group of diseases that can start in any part of the body when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably and invade adjoining parts of the body and/or spread to other organs. A neoplasm and malignant tumour are other common names for cancer. Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, accounting for an estimated 9.6 million deaths, or 1 in 6 deaths, in 2018. Lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach and liver cancer are the most common types of cancer in men, while breast, colorectal, lung, cervical and thyroid cancer are the most common among women. In India, Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers among both men and women.
The cancer burden continues to grow globally, exerting tremendous physical, emotional and financial strain on individuals, families, communities and health systems. In countries where health systems are strong, survival rates of many types of cancers are improving thanks to accessible early detection, quality treatment and survivorship care. Over a third of all cancers can be prevented by reducing exposure to risk factors such as tobacco, obesity, physical inactivity, infections, alcohol, environmental pollution, occupational carcinogens and radiation. Vaccination against the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), protects against liver cancer and cervical cancer respectively.
There are a number of cancers which can be identified early which helps to improve the chances of successful treatment outcomes, often at lower costs and with fewer (or less significant) side effects for patients. There are cost-effective tests that help detect colorectal, breast, cervical and oral cancers early and further tests are being developed for other cancers.
In this seminar, we will hear from experts about the common exposures for younger populations which can lead to cancer and early detection of common cancers which can help reduce deaths due to cancer and improve the quality of life. We will discuss mainly oral cancer, cervical cancer and breast cancer in this seminar as our experts mainly work in these areas.
