Cancer Screening in India: Strategies for Early Detection and Prevention

SpeakerDr Vishal Choksi, Director and Founder of Northwest Cancer Hospital and Senior Head and Neck Cancer Surgeon, will discuss advancements in early diagnosis, treatment options, and preventive measures for cancer in India. Jagriti Gupta, Biostatistician at the Bagchi School of Public Health, will provide insights into the relative occurrence of major cancers in India and present screening recommendations based on age and gender.
This talk will focus on the cancer screening recommendations and implementation strategies within the Indian healthcare context. It will address the most prevalent cancers in India, including oral, breast, and cervical cancers, which together constitute over 40% of cancer cases in the country. Special emphasis is placed on cost-effective screening approaches suitable for both urban and rural settings. We will discuss challenges unique to the Indian setting, including cultural barriers, healthcare access disparities, and resource constraints, along with practical solutions for implementing sustainable screening programmes. The talk will also cover recent technological innovations including AI and different health solutions that show promise in expanding screening coverage across India's population.

Dr Vishal Chokshi
Dr Vishal Choksi is a senior Head and Neck Cancer Surgeon based in Ahmedabad. He is a visiting consultant at several leading hospitals. He has held various leadership positions as Chief of Head and Neck Surgery at Apollo Ahmedabad, and then as Director of Head and Neck Surgery at Apollo-CBCC Cancer Center. He trained as a General Surgeon in New York and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery. He further specialized in Head and Neck Surgery at Memorial Sloan- Kettering Cancer Center in New York and is the only surgeon in India to have trained in a certified American Head and Neck Society Fellowship at Memorial Sloan- Kettering. He was also a post-doctoral fellow at Weill Cornell Medical School in New York, where he performed basic science research under an NIH training grant. He has a special interest in thyroid cancers and thyroid surgery, as well as cancer education.
