We tend to think that science and values are quite distinct. Science tells us about how things are but values are about how things should be. This distinction has led many to believe that our values do not play any role in science. But recently, many philosophers of science have suggested that given the tremendous influence of science over our lives, and the possibility of error in science, there should be a role for values in science. In this talk, we clarify this position by discussing the relation between science and values in two scientific debates in paleoanthropology and toxicology.
