The human race, in its quest for knowledge, has been seeking answers to some of the fundamental questions concerning the celestial objects we observe in the night sky. For example, how do galaxies evolve? How do stars form, and how do they live and die in different kinds of galaxies? Our nearby Universe contains relics of such celestial events of the past and provides us with a window of opportunities to explore them and understand the physical processes involved. This lecture will include discussions on the above topics. We will also discuss how our understanding has changed since the era of small telescopes and where we are heading in the fascinating era of mega telescope facilities.
