From the academic year 2027-28, we will begin offering the Honours programme in Bachelor of Science in Economics, which was erstwhile administered as the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Economics programme. In keeping with a rapidly changing global landscape and the increasing reliance on data-driven advancements in policy and markets, this version of our undergraduate programme in economics is more rigorous, highly interdisciplinary, and explicitly combines scientific and mathematical thinking with economic principles. The programme incorporates deep connections with other disciplines at Ahmedabad University, emphasising statistics, econometrics, and data science, to equip students to take on complex, real-world challenges that demand quantitative, evidence-based solutions. Our new version of the programme integrates strong scientific inquiry, mathematical modelling, and technological proficiency to perfectly complement modern economic theory.
The distinguishing feature of the Bachelor of Science in Economics (Honours) at Ahmedabad University is its emphasis on rigour and creativity. Students will be taught to analyse and think independently about issues using an economics theoretical framework and data-based evidence. The programme focuses on the development of a strong foundation in Mathematics to allow students to better grasp modern economic theory. They will develop skills necessary to analyse economic and financial issues using mathematical models. Students will also develop a proficiency in statistics, empirical methods and statistical software packages, driven by rigorous coursework in probability, mathematical statistics, linear algebra, and data science.
The final year undergraduate thesis or capstone project requirement will train students to think creatively about a topic of their own interest and to conduct systematic scientific research on it. The thesis and the years preceding it, including the First Year Seminar, will provide ample opportunity to develop strong writing, critical thinking, communication and presentation skills.
The Bachelor of Science in Economics (Honours) will introduce students to Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Theoretical and Applied Econometrics, Mathematics, Statistics, History of Economic Thought, and a study of the Indian Economy. In addition, students may choose from a wide range of electives and learn more about specific areas of Economics such as Behavioural and Experimental Economics, Development Economics, Environment and Resource Economics, Finance, Game Theory, Industrial Organisation, Labour Economics, Machine Learning for Policy, Political Economy, and many more. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the undergraduate programme at Ahmedabad University, students will also take classes in other subject areas spanning the humanities, biological and life sciences, performing arts, and digital technology, and thus have an opportunity to learn alternative theories and pedagogies. The programme will provide an early opportunity for students to learn to collaborate with peers. This is because during the Foundation Programme, and subsequently throughout the curriculum, there will be a strong emphasis on project-based learning. Furthermore, students will engage in mandatory volunteerism, fostering a sense of social responsibility alongside their academic pursuits.

University recognises the evolving expectations of employers, who seek adaptable, tech-savvy, and well-rounded individuals with strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork abilities. Accordingly, the university integrates structured skill courses delivered through both internal and external platforms to prepare students as “T-shaped” professionals capable of applying knowledge effectively in diverse professional contexts. Skill courses are designed and offered with an aim to develop applied, demonstrable capabilities aligned with career aspirations and job roles.
Note: Courses to be taken from the existing list or approved On-campus courses and MOOCs: See document Mapping Skills to Jobs.
Free electives let students pursue any particular area in more depth, develop alternate areas of expertise, or learn more about many other interests. They provide flexibility for customising education at the University. It can take the following form:
Notes:
All graduating students must have completed an Undergraduate Thesis or a Capstone Project. Students can approach a faculty member within the University to serve as a mentor for their undergraduate thesis. Students with a CGPA below the cut-off must complete a capstone project. These projects involve interdisciplinary groups (four to six students) collaborating to solve real-world problems that require expertise from multiple fields. They identify a problem and seek guidance from a faculty mentor to formulate a capstone project, which can be done across two semesters (six credits each semester or three + nine credits) or in a single semester.
A summer internship offers invaluable professional experience and the chance to develop specific, employable skills. It provides an excellent opportunity to explore potential career paths post graduation or discover new graduate programme interests. This experience connects with industry, often serving as a direct stepping stone to a job offer. Most of our programmes include a mandatory internship requirement.
It's advised that you start thinking about internships early in the monsoon semester. You may seek advice from the Career Development Centre.
All students will complete 45 hours of community engagement to develop a sense of social responsibility, enhance problem-solving skills, and understand their role as engaged members of society. They must undergo a mandatory course, VOL101 Engagement with Society, which is a graduation requirement. Students are advised to complete the course during the first two years at the University. Volunteer work could include teaching underprivileged children, participating in adult literacy programmes, distributing blankets or other items, working with old age homes and orphanages, providing support and encouragement to patients at hospitals, cleaning heritage sites, engaging with workers on campus, operating a food bank, engaging with the police, municipal government, zoo, sanitation services, etc.
On completion of the programme, the student will be able to:
The degree will prepare students to study further or seek employment directly, supported by a mandatory summer internship that bridges academic theory with practical, real-world experience. One can pursue graduate studies in economics or related disciplines such as Business, Law, Political Science, Public Administration and Public Policy. Employment opportunities, upon completing the major in Economics, include working in business, civil services, corporate sector, government, investment banks, journalism, media, technology firms, non-governmental organisations, think tanks and research institutions.
