BCom (Hons) Student’s AI Solution for Rural Healthcare Wins National Recognition

Krisha Anandpara

The doctor-to-patient ratio in rural and arid regions of Western Rajasthan is as low as 0.32 per 1,000 people*, far below the WHO benchmark of 1 per 1,000, creating a severe healthcare crisis. This shortfall could be attributed to geographical isolation that limits access to healthcare, resource scarcity, socioeconomic barriers, cultural and social stigma, and climate-related vulnerabilities that further strain fragile systems.

Addressing this challenge, Krisha Anandpara, BCom (Hons) Class of 2026, along with her teammate Krish Bucha from Institute of Management Technology Ghaziabad, proposed an AI-powered healthcare system capable of anticipating health risks and delivering proactive care. Their solution envisioned a voice-first platform operable even on basic feature phones, designed to bridge the digital divide.

By integrating a Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) model through local community health workers (CHWs), the system would combine the empathy and trust of human intervention with the speed and precision of AI. Sustainability was a key principle of their design, which emphasised eco-conscious practices, privacy, and data-backed efficiency.

The team arrived at this solution after analysing the failures of the traditional clinic-doctor model in rural areas and studying examples where conversational AI reduced wait times and mobile applications already supported CHWs in health tracking. Building on these insights, they developed the Synergy Platform using natural language processing (NLP) and automatic speech recognition (ASR), both fine-tuned for diverse Indian languages and dialects.

The design was a two-way system where AI generated culturally sensitive and empathetic responses, while CHWs validated recommendations and conducted follow-ups. The team further tested the idea through user journeys, demonstrating its feasibility and real-world relevance.

The estimated impact of the solution is substantial. Their work aims to reduce hospitalisations for climate-sensitive and waterborne diseases in the pilot district by 20–25 per cent, while generating 10,000 unique voice interactions in the first six months, establishing adoption of the low-tech model. Additionally, it projects a 30 per cent increase in the efficiency of CHW-led interventions.

Beyond measurable outcomes, the initiative aspires to build trust and dignity through local language support. It ensures private and empathetic interactions, empower CHWs with targeted AI-driven insights, and bridge the digital and healthcare divide to create a scalable model for arid and underserved regions.

The motivation to address this problem stemmed from the acute shortage of healthcare resources in rural India and the urgent need to transition from reactive to proactive healthcare. Through this project, the students aimed to empower communities and health workers with accessible, equitable, and dignified care.

Their collaboration was driven by a shared passion for technology and social impact. Krish focused on quantitative analysis, business modelling, and structuring. Krisha concentrated on real-life applications, AI integration, execution, and design.

Their work was recognised nationally, securing them the 6th position among 1,000 competing teams at the SRCC Case Championship 2025, a prestigious competition on AI for Social Impact organised by Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), Delhi in collaboration with Gulf Medical University, UAE. They also authored a chapter in the official ICAISI Case Championship Book, ensuring that their work continues to make an impact beyond the competition.
