Jayendra M Bhalodiya, Assistant Professor | Ahmedabad University

Jayendra M Bhalodiya

Assistant Professor

PhD (The University of Warwick)

[email protected]

Research Interests: Medical Image Processing, Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence, Health Technology

Profile

Professor Jayendra Bhalodiya believes in holistic education covering academic, social, emotional, and spiritual intelligence that can contribute towards a healthy society and wealthy nation. Particularly in academic intelligence, Professor Bhalodiya believes in a multidisciplinary problem-solving approach to add value to society. Professor Bhalodiya did Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology at LD College of Engineering, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Then, he was awarded a Junior Research Fellowship at the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering in IIT Kharagpur, India. Professor Bhalodiya pursued a Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering at Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) of the University of Warwick, UK. After that, Professor Bhalodiya pursued a research fellowship as part of the Health Data Research UK project at the Institute of Digital Healthcare, WMG, the University of Warwick, UK.

Research

Professor Bhalodiya addresses medical diagnostic tools and techniques research through computer science methods. His main clinical interests are cardiac and brain conditions. His technical interests are computer vision, image processing, and artificial intelligence methods. Professor Bhalodiya’s PhD research addressed developing a safe and accurate method to identify infarcted muscle in myocardial infarcted patients. For that, he developed a novel method that does not require a harmful gadolinium-based contrast agent injection. Moreover, he introduced the local weighted mean transformation function to the myocardial tracking and strain calculation problem-solving in 2D and 3D. Professor Bhalodiya’s post-doctoral research addressed efficient and accurate brain tumour diagnosis using multiple MRI sequences and artificial intelligence methods. Professor Bhalodiya employed various brain tumour segmentation methods to identify tumour areas. Moreover, he adopted radiomics features analysis to identify novel image biomarkers in brain tumour diagnosis. Professor Bhalodiya also has interests in arts. He depicts realism and expressionism through wildlife photography. His favourite subjects are birds. Professor Bhalodiya’s interview and photographs are published in internationally leading wildlife magazines. He encourages ethical wildlife conservation efforts.

Research Projects

Engineering

  • AI tool for tumour segmentation, characterisation, and diagnosis (Ongoing)
    • Role: Principal Investigator
    • The project is about developing a transformer-based deep architecture to segment brain tumours from multi-sequence MRI. The developed method will be utilised for tumour segmentation in glioma patients. Moreover, radiomics feature extraction and analysis will be performed to characterise tumour aggressiveness by assessing tumour components non-invasively. The developed methods will be tested with histopathology and gene expression for the tumour diagnosis.
  • Cardiomyopathy teleconsultation app
    • Role: Principal Investigator
    • A tool to help consultant cardiologists in diagnosing cardiomyopathy patients to recommend a patient-specific management plan. The tool is empowered with robust assessment criteria practised over several decades by our collaborators. Moreover, it is easy for patients and clinical staff to use.
  • AI tool for mugger crocodile conservation (Ongoing)
    • Role: Co-Principal Investigator and Technical Expert
    • AI-based tool development and mobile device deployment to track mugger crocodiles in the wild. The tool is based on drone imagery processed through deep neural networks.

Innovative UG Projects

  • Classcombinator.com - An EdTech tool for liberal education universities to enhance the student experience in efficiently selecting courses for an upcoming semester. Have a look at the project video. It is live at for Ahmedabad University students. The project was developed by the first-year students, Zeel Rajodiya, Tanisha Kanade and Vinisha Kankariya, in my Programming course.
  • IndianSignLanguageTranslator - There are only 250 trained/untrained individuals for Indian sign language (ISL) translation, and the need is about 18 million people. There are tools for British and American sign language translation but limited tools for ISL translation. My first-year UG students Siya Dhaduk, Charmi Goyal and Priscilla R developed an ISL translation tool using AI and ML. It can perform text to sign and sign to text conversion. Have a look at the project video.
  • AI Tool Development for Pathological Staining - It is an AI-based health tech solution to understand pathology without using chemicals. The method is developed using CycleGAN of deep learning. It produces virtually stained images of tissue slides without using chemicals and conventional staining methods. The developed method has the potential to be developed as a more sustainable, cost-effective, accurate, and widely accessible solution for pathological laboratories. The project is developed and nicely showcased with an animated project video by Niyati Patel.

Student Activities

  • Faculty Mentor at Ingenium 2023, the annual technical festival of Ahmedabad University (2023)

Contribution to the Society

  • Porbandar Bird Count 2026: We conducted a systematic survey of avian biodiversity in and around Porbandar, Gujarat, covering all major wetlands, including Mokarsagar. The survey was the fifth annual bird count to record the abundance of waterfowl in the region. More than 4 Lakh birds of 249 species were recorded during the two-day bird count. Birders from across India contributed to the exercise. The exercise was jointly organised by the Bird Conservation Society, Gujarat (BCSG) and the Porbandar Forest Division of the Gujarat Forest Department, and sponsored by Saurashtra Chemicals.
  • Gujarat Bird Race 2026: We conducted a state-wide systematic survey of avian biodiversity in Gujarat. We cover all types of habitats to find out variety of bird species in different geographies within the state. A total of 369 bird species were reported by dozens of teams collectively within a single day. All the data was compiled and published on an open-access platform, eBird. The exercise was organised by Pranidhi Trust and Bird Conservation Society, Gujarat (BCSG), and sponsored by Tata Chemicals Ltd. https://ebird.org/tripreport/464382
  • WINGS - Birds of India Gujarat 2025: We conducted a state-wide systematic survey of bird species in Gujarat as part of the WINGS - Birds of India program. It is a citizen science-based approach to raise awareness and document avian biodiversity and natural history. The exercise was sponsored by HSBC and Tata Chemicals. The event was coordinated by the Pranidhi Trust and Yuhina Eco Media. Major birding sites from 30 (out of 33) districts of Gujarat were surveyed during the event with 225+ birders. The event was widely covered by various media. Survey outcome: https://ebird.org/tripreport/314448/
  • Pan-Gujarat Bird Race 2024: We conducted a systematic bird species survey as part of the HSBC IndiaBird Races 2024 in Gujarat with a citizen science approach to raise environmental awareness and support conservation efforts. The collected data were shared on the eBird platform. The exercise was coordinated by the Bird Conservation Society, Gujarat (BCSG) and sponsored by HSBC.
