Language as Cultural Identity: Challenges of Preserving Sindhi Language
Centre for Heritage Management organized a talk, "Language as Identity: Challenges of Preserving Sindhi Language" by Dr Vimmi Sadarangini on August 12, 2016. The talk was attended by faculty, staff, students, and visitors from the city. Dr Sadarangini began the talk from her own experience of being a Sindhi but learning her mother tongue fairly late in her educational process and the dilemma of this common phenomenon in identity and culture of similar other people (regardless of the language spoken as mother tongue), which resonated very strongly across the audience as noted during the discussion session. She then provided an overview of the historical transformations of Sindhi language – both in spoken and written forms, the dilemma brought to Sindhi people by the partition, current global scenario of Sindhi language among diaspora communities, and then analyzed a few institutional and individual works done with regards to preservation of language, the issues of translation from Sindhi to other languages, and the issue of transmission of cultural knowledge in case of a dwindling language. The talk was a first in the series that CHM has envisioned as a continuation of critical issues in heritage management, particularly drawing from its Masters' students’ recently completed practicum experience. The first edition was organized with support from the Centre for Heritage Management’s own project – Ahmedabad Cultural Heritage Venture Lab, being carried out through the European Union funding. Prior to the public lecture, Dr Vimmi Sadarangini interacted informally in a luncheon meeting with the Masters' students at Centre for Heritage Management.
