Why you should be a Biologist?
One reason why biology is so interesting is the sheer diversity of mechanisms that organisms have evolved to survive and make a living. Modern biology has unravelled many such mechanisms, and we now understand at a deep level, the inner workings of many traits and behaviours. This brief talk will cover some defence mechanisms which have evolved, been lost, evolved again,or evolved convergently in unrelated species. Involving nothing more than variations in the structure and function of the molecules of life (proteins, carbohydrates, etc.), they tell us that the pressure to adapt and change can throw up surprising, often bizarre, solutions to the problem of survival.
