Among its many firsts, Ahmedabad’s University Centre is the first building in the city to deploy large-scale precast concrete technology for its structure, enabling both efficiency and innovation in construction.
The Centre was envisioned as an incubator for academic life and a place for generating new ideas by creating interactive spaces besides formal educational functions. Verandahs become performance spaces, the cafeteria at the ground level is designed as an extension of Ahmedabad’s vibrant food culture, and staggered floors bring natural light deep inside while connecting people across levels. Sustainability runs through its design with recessed façades that reduce energy load, a rooftop powered by 450 solar panels, advanced water reuse systems, and a LEED Platinum certification.
This thoughtful integration of design, sustainability, and community has led to another international recognition after the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Award. The University Centre has received an Honourable Mention at The International Architecture Awards 2025, conferred by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. Now in its 20th year, it is amongst the world's oldest and most prestigious global awards programme for new and cutting-edge design, with the University Centre selected from more than 500 projects worldwide.
