If land degradation is not stop, it can lead to extreme floods for extreme drought in the state, professor has warned. “Years of lopsided land policies of the successive governments have led to land degradation in India,” said Professor N H Ravindranath of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore 

The professor was speaking on desertification and land degradation in the context of Climate Change at a conference titled ‘Climate Change and Land’, organised by Ahmedabad University. Recalling the report of Space Applications Centre, 2016, Professor Mishra said, “Desertification and land degradation is very serious in Gujarat especially in western Gujarat and Rajasthan.” 

Due to the imbalance of climate change and lack of intervention from the government side, sometimes we have extreme drought or extreme flood, resulting in a huge catastrophe in the region. Warning that unless the government takes proactive measure, the climate of Gujarat and Rajasthan will become severe. 

“Extreme flood or extreme drought will become a new norm and the government will have serious difficulties coping up with the issue especially in the context of Gujarat,” he added
