Research Paper: India most cost-effective globally in rooftop solar power

At Ahmedabad University, climate change and sustainable energy are treated with the urgency they deserve. In a first-of-its-kind global study, Priyadarshi Shukla, Distinguished Professor and Director of the Global Centre for Environment and Energy, and a team of researchers found that India will be the most cost-effective country for generating rooftop solar energy. Rooftop solar photovoltaics (RTSPV) technology, currently the fastest deployable cost-effective sustainable energy solution, is projected to fulfil 25-49 percent of global electricity demand by 2050. 
 
At 1.7 petawatt-hour per year, India is ahead of China by almost USD 28 for the same energy output. Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have the highest solar rooftop potential while the lowest costs were estimated in Gujarat and Rajasthan. "The country will be able to match its current electricity demand of 1.3 petawatt-hour per annum if we install efficient solar panels on 40 percent of the country’s available rooftop area," said Professor Shukla.
