Jeemol Unni Invited as External Collaborator by International Labour Organization, Geneva, to Review Employment Statistics in the Informal Sector From a Gender Perspective to Impact Policy Making

Jeemol Unni, Professor of Economics at Amrut Mody School of Management, has been invited by the International Labour Organization (ILO), Geneva, as an external collaborator on the Engendering Informality Statistics project underway with the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. She will review statistics on informal employment from a gender perspective. The project is part of the new standards for consideration and adoption at the 21st International Conference of Labour Statisticians (ICLS), to be held in October 2023. 

Professor Unni will review the use of gender and informality statistics, identifying use cases, and assessing current diagnostic approaches in conjunction with the role of quantitative data. She says, “I will identify important gaps in the new informality indicator framework and diagnostic methods and recommend how to integrate a gender perspective. I am also expected to propose a framework for conducting a gender-sensitive analysis of informality statistics that can guide the production and use of official statistics.” Professor Unni’s work will support ILO in demonstrating and highlighting issues to consider from the gender perspective, inform the ICLS’ discussions, and serve as a resource for countries when implementing new standards.
