International Recognition for Ahmedabad University Engineering Graduate

Jainam Shah, a mechanical engineering graduate from the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Ahmedabad University has won the Student Advisory Committee Travel Award (SACTA) at the Turbo Expo 2021 organised by the ASME International Gas Turbine Institute (IGTI). Jainam is one of the five exhibitors from India selected for recognition.

In addition to being named as a SACTA recipient, Jainam was also selected as a student liaison for the Industrial and Cogeneration Committee of Turbo Expo for the term 2021-22. The primary goal of the SAC student liaison programme is to give the students the opportunity to serve as a link between the SAC and the leadership of the technical committees.

IGTI is a group of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), a nonprofit professional organization founded in 1880 to enable international collaboration and skill development across engineering disciplines. Turbo Expo is an annual conference that encompasses topics spanning the full spectrum of research and industry knowledge related to turbomachinery and provides the opportunity for professional development. The Student Advisory Committee (SAC) engages with students from across the globe to improve the Turbo Expo conference every year. The platform provides opportunities for students to work behind the scenes with the IGTI leadership.

Jainam was selected to attend the ASME Student Leadership Training Conference 2020. 

“It was a great opportunity to learn from students all over the world and understand how similar problems faced by the engineering community are addressed in unique ways,” Jainam said while talking about his experience of attending the programme. “The experience helped me to be cognizant of things from a broader, multi-dimensional perspective.”

Jainam, a student of the Class of 2021, is a little disappointed that the COVID-19 travel restrictions forced the organisers to turn into an online event this year and he missed the opportunity to travel to the venue free of cost.

He served as Chair of the ASME Student Section at Ahmedabad University. Such sections chartered at the engineering departments of colleges and universities around the world help complement the curriculum of the educational institution while enriching the student experience.
