Ahmedabad University Gujarat’s Sole Education Institute to Receive Indian Green Building Council Platinum Certification
Ahmedabad University's dedication to sustainability, reflected in its infrastructure, sustainable practices, and educational initiatives, has earned it the ‘Platinum Certification’ under the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Green Campus Rating System. The certification has been awarded to 20 educational institutions nationwide, with Ahmedabad University being the sole institution from Gujarat to receive it.
The “Platinum Rating” is the highest accolade conferred by the IGBC, acknowledging campuses that demonstrate exceptional sustainability standards. This recognition reflects Ahmedabad University's focus on sustainability, which is centred on reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and promoting eco-friendly practices across the campus.
Awarded for the University's Central Campus, the certification represents the University's global leadership in implementing green concepts and reducing measurable environmental impacts, evidenced in the University’s infrastructure. The University Centre is the first building in Ahmedabad to use precast concrete technology, saving 20% of the steel in slabs compared to conventional methods. It minimises waste through dry construction and efficiently reuses water for irrigation, flushing, and HVAC systems. The sewage treatment plant and the rooftop solar panel contribute to recycling and saving resources.
Buildings across campus are designed with energy efficiency in mind, incorporating double-glazed windows, insulation on top slab, maintaining indoor quality as per ASHRAE standards, LED lighting, and LEED-certified construction for upcoming projects. Waste management is also a priority, with initiatives such as student-led recycling, e-waste collection, and organic waste conversion.
The recognition comes after evaluating several categories, including site planning and management, sustainable transportation, water conservation, energy efficiency, material and resource management, health and wellbeing, sustainable operation and maintenance, and innovation in design.
The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) is the country's leading authority in promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly developments. The IGBC Platinum Rating is the highest recognition for campuses that meet strict sustainability criteria, positioning Ahmedabad University as a leader in the green revolution.
