Ahmedabad Faculty Part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Named Co-Laureate of the 2022 Gulbenkian Prize

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) with the Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) received the 2022 Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity. The jury of the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity led by scientist and former chancellor of Germany, Dr Angela Merkel, selected the IPCC and IPBES out of 116 nominations from 41 countries in recognition of  “…the role of science on the front line of tackling climate change and the loss of biodiversity.” Ahmedabad University has hosted the IPCC Working Group III Technical Support Unit since 2018. Priyadarshi Shukla, Distinguished Professor, Amrut Mody School of Management, and Chair, Global Centre for Environment and Energy, is the Co-Chair of Working Group III of IPCC. Minal Pathak, Associate Professor, Amrut Mody School of Management and Global Centre for Environment and Energy, Senior Scientist of Working Group III, and scientists Shreya Some and Purvi Vyas, are drafting authors and editors on the Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change report of the IPCC. 

The Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity recognises accomplishments and contributions to solve the climate crisis. The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation supporting the recognition considers domains that can contribute to mitigate and/or adapt to the impacts of climate change, such as the reduction or prevention of greenhouse gas emissions or the increased absorption of already emitted GHG. The mitigation actions require, for example, the use of new technologies, clean energy sources, reducing deforestation or restoring natural ecosystems, sustainable agriculture, and changes in consumer behaviour. The Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity was first awarded in 2020 to the young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. In 2021, it was conferred on the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy.
