Research Interests: Complex Systems and Biological Physics

Profile

Sutapa Mukherji is a physicist with primary research interest  in the area of Complex Systems and Biological Physics.

Sutapa received her  doctoral degree in Theoretical Physics from  Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, and subsequently she joined University of Cologne, Germany as post-doctoral scholar   where she worked on disordered high temperature superconductors. In a second post-doctoral stay at the University of Essen, Germany, she was involved in developing field theoretic  methods to understand phase transitions in semi-infinite systems.  Sutapa served as a faculty in the department of Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur  and  at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur for about seventeen years. During these  years at IITs, she taught extensively at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

She applies various tools of statistical mechanics to study driven many particle systems which have strong connections with intracellular transport processes. Recently, she has developed a strong interest in understanding functions of gene-regulatory networks. Her primary  aim is to understand the relation between the network design and the functional characterisitcs  of networks.

Research

Sutapa’s research interest is broadly around the general theme of understanding different types of nonequilibrium processes some  of which have strong connections with processes inside the biological cell. Specific topics include

  • Driven exclusion processes: understanding nonequilibrium phases and phase transitions
  • Characterizing growth dynamics of biopolymers
  • Characterizing non-equilibrium processes through distribution functions and  fluctuation theorems
  • Gene regulatory networks: understanding  why the networks are designed the way they are
