Dr Rajendra Gadhavi is a medical graduate (MBBS) and completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) in the field of Preventive Medicine and Doctoral degree (PhD) in Epidemiology. Dr Gadhavi also completed a Master in Health Service Administration (MHA) at Midwestern State University, Wichita Falls, Texas, USA.
Dr Gadhavi is a seasoned medical epidemiologist with over two decades of diverse experience in public health education, applied epidemiology, health programme implementation, and global health consultancy. His academic and professional journey spans prestigious teaching institutions and international agencies, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Government of India, UNICEF, and several state health departments. A Professor of Practice at the Bagchi School of Public Health, Ahmedabad University, Dr Gadhavi contributes to curriculum design, research mentoring, and teaching in the areas of epidemiology, disease surveillance, and implementation science. He brings a rare combination of academic rigour and field-based insights gained from leading public health initiatives in India and internationally, including in Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands, and Nigeria.
His teaching is grounded in real-world public health challenges, ranging from the design and execution of national immunisation campaigns to the epidemiological response during the COVID-19 pandemic. His leadership roles include Deputy Director at the Gujarat State AIDS Control Society, State Lead Epidemiologist during the COVID-19 pandemic in Gujarat, and Director of Hospital Management at Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University. Widely recognised for his contributions, Dr Gadhavi has received awards from WHO and the Government of Gujarat, including a Certificate of Appreciation for vaccine-preventable disease control and the Corona Warrior Award for his service during the pandemic. His work is defined by strategic thinking, innovation, and a commitment to capacity building in health systems.
Dr Gadhavi’s research spans epidemiological surveillance, maternal and child health, non-communicable diseases, HIV/AIDS, and implementation science. He has successfully led and collaborated on several research projects supported by organisations such as the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), World Diabetes Foundation (WDF), UNICEF, and various state governments.
