Profile

A trained electrical engineer, Professor Majumdar obtained a BE degree from Jadavpur University and worked in the industry for two years. He then did an MTech in Solid State Technology at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and moved to physics, completing his PhD in Condensed Matter Theory at the Indian Institute of Science. Professor Majumdar pursued his postdoctoral work at Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, USA. He joined as a faculty member at Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI), erstwhile Mehta Research Institute of Mathematics and Mathematical Physics (MRI), Allahabad, in 1998 and worked there till the end of 2024. He served as the Director of the institute between 2017 and 2024. Professor Majumdar's research interests are in condensed matter theory and statistical mechanics.

Research

Professor Majumdar's broad area is quantum many-body physics, divided between method development and model problems pertinent to phenomena like magnetism, superconductivity, and, more recently, non-equilibrium phenomena. These problems are interesting and difficult because they involve strong interactions, the presence of randomness and geometric frustration, and require solving for time-dependent phenomena. There is a rich crosstalk between theory and experiment.
