The Political Integration of Indian Americans in Northern California: Tech, Diaspora Mobilization, and Transnational Ties

Arts and Sciences Lecture Series
Gilles Verniers, Speaker at Ahmedabad University

Gilles Verniers

Postdoctoral Researcher
The Centre for International Research (CERI), Sciences Po, France
Speaker

This presentation examines the parallel rise of Indian American electoral participation and Hindu advocacy organisations in Northern California, arguing that the two phenomena are structurally linked through the diaspora's distinctive socioeconomic position in the technology industry. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley, I show how the marked overrepresentation of Indian-origin professionals in the tech sector has generated both the financial resources and the organisational capacity underpinning Indian Americans' growing engagement in local politics — from school boards and city councils to mayoral offices and state-level positions. I contend that this trajectory represents a distinctive model of diasporic political incorporation, one in which ethnic capital accumulated in the private sector is converted into civic and electoral influence at the municipal and state levels.
