My research examines Medieval Legal History with a focus on Mughal India. I hope to study the legal activity, as against the legal textual tradition in Mughal India. Of course, I would not be disregarding the high legal-sacral texts, but my primary interest is in exploring the conversations between the textual tradition and everyday legal practice in early modern South Asia. One of the issues that I would be studying is the nature and depth of legal pluralism in Mughal India. In other words, one of the issues my research concerns is the extent to which the state facilitated diversity and multiplicities in the reproduction of the legal system.
