The contemporary social world we collectively inhabit is a complex one, beset with economic, ecological, social and political challenges. Faculty members and students at the Social Sciences division address these challenges through a combination of institutional analysis at the global, national and local scales, and the study of individual and collective behaviour in a variety of contexts.
Comprising disciplines such as Anthropology, Economics, Education, Political Sciences, Psychology, Sociology and Urban Studies, the Division brings together various academic traditions of enquiry in the social sciences, including experimental approaches, statistical analysis of survey data, ethnographic fieldwork, historical case studies, and mathematical modelling. Such a synoptic view of social processes helps government institutions, corporations, and non-profits formulate effective policies and interventions.
The Division of Social Sciences is a significant contributor to three undergraduate majors of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) programme: Economics, Psychology, and Social and Political Sciences. The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Economics is jointly administered with the Amrut Mody School of Management. The Master of Arts in Economics programme is administered by the Amrut Mody School of Management.
