This talk explores how migration to mountain villages in Uttarakhand - both historic and recent - feeds a growing moral panic about how the distinctive cultural and social identity of mountain people (paharis) is at risk. I draw on ethnographic research to illuminate how discourses of demographic threat surface and shape everyday intimate life.
