About the PhD Program at School of Engineering and Applied Science **
- The minimum coursework for doctoral programme at School of Engineering and Applied Science shall be as follows:
- 12 courses of 3 credits each (or 36 credits) for student who has entered with a previous ME/MTech degree (with a thesis). Of these 12 courses, four courses have to be foundation courses: Quantitative Research Methods (equivalent to Probability and Statistics), Qualitative Research Methods (equivalent to Research Methodology), Communication skills (equivalent to Technical Communication/Writing), and Pedagogy & Teaching-Learning Skills. The remaining courses have to be engineering domain courses (core, or electives, or specialization/advanced, etc).
- 16 courses of 3 credits each (or 48 credits) for student who has entered with a previous ME/MTech degree without thesis (i.e., ME/MTech based on only course work). Of these 16 courses, four courses have to be foundation courses: Quantitative Research Methods (equivalent to Probability and Statistics), Qualitative Research Methods (equivalent to Research Methodology), Communication skills (equivalent to Technical Communication/Writing), and Pedagogy & Teaching-Learning Skills. The remaining courses have to be engineering domain courses (core, or electives, or specialization/advanced, etc).
- 20 courses of 3 credits each (or 60 credits) for student who has entered with a previous BE/BTech degree or with a previous MSc degree. Of these 20 courses, four courses have to be foundation courses: Quantitative Research Methods (equivalent to Probability and Statistics), Qualitative Research Methods (equivalent to Research Methodology), Communication skills (equivalent to Technical Communication/Writing), and Pedagogy & Teaching-Learning Skills. The remaining courses have to be engineering domain courses (core, or electives, or specialization/advanced, etc).
- Student will have to pass the PhD comprehensive examination, in the broad area of research interest. This exam will have two components: Written Exam (based on three domain courses) and Oral Presentation (based on research paper(s) assigned to the student). The committee appointed by School of Engineering and Applied Science, would decide and administer all the components of the PhD comprehensive examination
- The PhD comprehensive examination is generally taken after completing minimum two semesters of coursework at School of Engineering. During these two semesters, the student is expected to take 4 courses (3 credits each) during each semester. In case the student fails the PhD comprehensive exam in the first attempt, he/she will have only two more attempts to pass the exam. If the student fails in all three attempts, then he/she will be asked to leave the doctoral programme.
- All students (whether part-time or full-time) are expected to be available full-time at School of Engineering (while completing part of their coursework), till the time he/she passes the PhD comprehensive exam.
- The student may complete remaining/pending coursework, if any, after passing the PhD comprehensive examination.
- After completion of PhD comprehensive examination, student needs to submit a research proposal, and give a presentation to the Doctoral Program Committee (DPC). The DPC may ask the candidate to revise and resubmit the research proposal after incorporating all the suggestions and comments given by them, and give a revised presentation to the DPC.
- Once the DPC approves the research proposal, a Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) would be formed and approved by the School of Engineering. The TAC would consist of minimum three members: the supervisor from School of Engineering, one faculty member from School of Engineering, and one external expert from academia/industry. School of Engineering will appoint a supervisor (based on mutual consent given by both the faculty and the student) for the student. The supervisor has to be a faculty member of School of Engineering. The supervisor would be the chairperson of the TAC.
- There shall be periodic review (every semester) of the progress of the student by way of presentation or Research Progress Seminar (RPS). The TAC would be responsible for monitoring the progress of the student.
- The student will have upto 6 years (from the date of their research proposal approved by the DPC), to complete all academic requirements related to the doctoral programme.
- The student is eligible to submit the PhD synopsis (approx. 30 page report) to office of the Dean of School of Engineering after completing a minimum of two years (from the date of their research proposal approved by the DPC). However, the PhD synopsis has to be first reviewed and approved by the TAC, before it is submitted to the office of the Dean of School of Engineering. Upon receiving PhD synopsis, the office of the Dean of School of Engineering may send the PhD synopsis for an internal review.
- Within six months of the approval of the PhD Synopsis, the student will have to submit the PhD thesis to the TAC for review (and give a presentation, if needed). The TAC can then provide suggestions for revision, and then approve the PhD thesis. The TAC will also suggest a list of external reviewers.
- The student will then submit the PhD thesis to the office of the Dean of School of Engineering, which will then be forwarded (along with the list of external reviewers suggested by the TAC) to the DPC for further action (external review process, open defence, etc.)
** School of Engineering, Ahmedabad University reserves the right to change the PhD program requirements/guidelines/structure/policy, at any time, with or without notice or procedure, for any reason deemed by School of Engineering, Ahmedabad University.
- There are two categories of financial assistance provided to doctoral students:
- School of Engineering Teaching Assistantship: School of Engineering provides a stipend of Rs. 12000 per month to eligible doctoral students. Tuition fee waiver is NOT included in this TAship. The responsibilities/load associated with this TAship includes: conducting laboratory courses and tutorials for UG/PG students, assisting in teaching, assisting in Lab development/maintenance/inventory, and academic administration.
- University Teaching Assistantship programme: This will be awarded on a competitive basis and the university will periodically establish the academic requirements for this award. This would include valid standardized test scores if applicable, and a high CGPA in the program. Student will have to apply (every year) to the appropriate authorities of AU for this award. Currently, the stipend is of Rs. 25,000 per month for 12 months, and a full waiver of tuition fee. The student would be required to maintain a minimum CGPA, and good academic/research progress, for renewal of the assistantship each year. The University Teaching Assistantship will be awarded to a student for a maximum period of four years subject to satisfactory academic/research performance. The responsibilities/load associated with this assistantship programme includes: conducting laboratory courses and tutorials for UG/PG students, assisting in teaching, assisting in Lab development/maintenance/inventory, assisting in research projects, and academic administration. Typically, the PhD student would be expected to conduct lab sessions for three courses.
Eligibility to apply for the doctoral programme: BE / BTech / ME / MTech / MSc with a minimum of 60% marks (The decision of the concerned authorities of School of Engineering and Applied Science regarding eligibility of any candidate shall be final.)
Following is the eligibility criteria for applying to the doctoral programme at School of Engineering:
- For ICT stream: BE/BTech/ME/MTech/MSc in Computer Science or Mathematics, Information Technology, Information and Communication Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering; any other degree may be accepted solely at the discretion of School of Engineering, Ahmedabad University.
- For Chemical Engineering stream: BE/BTech/ME/MTech/MSc in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Nanotechnology, Chemistry; any other degree may be accepted solely at the discretion of School of Engineering, Ahmedabad University.
- Candidates need to apply for PhD admissions, using the prescribed format (see application form)
- All eligible candidates will have to appear for PhD entrance test, conducted at School of Engineering and Applied Science. The syllabus for the same can be found here <Click Here>
- Here is a summary of the PhD Entrance Test:
- The PhD entrance test will be of 2 hours, and will have two parts:
- Part-A: Duration: 45 minutes: Mathematics (Compulsory for all students)
- Part-B: Duration: 1 hour and 15 minutes: Part-B will have the following sections :
- ICT - Computer Science
- ICT – Communication and Signal Processing
- ICT – VLSI Systems
- ChE - Applied Chemistry
- ChE - Chemical Engineering & Materials Engineering
- Part-A is compulsory for all students.
- In Part-B, the student can attempt as many questions from as many sections of Part-B. However, it is more likely that the student would attempt all questions from one section (of Part-B) that is nearest to his/her area of interest.
- Candidates shortlisted based on the result/performance of the PhD entrance test, will have to appear for an interview. In the interview, the candidates will be evaluated by a panel of expert faculty on foundational as well as specialized topics of their background and research interests.
- The schedule of the admission process is as follows:
- Application for Admissions open: April 6, 2018
- Last date to receive applications at School of Engineering and Applied Science: May 31, 2018
- Date of PhD entrance test and interviews: June 8, 2018
- 9 am to 11 am: PhD entrance test
- 1.30 pm: List of candidates shortlisted for interview (based on results of PhD entrance test)
- 2 pm onwards: Interviews
