Applied Finance Education Strengthened with the New Bloomberg Lab at the Amrut Mody School of Management, Ahmedabad University

Bloomberg Lab

Finance today is undergoing a rapid transformation, shaped by real-time global volatility, digital innovation, and fast evolving regulatory landscapes. For students of finance, economics, and management, this means the traditional classroom is no longer sufficient. Academic institutions must evolve to keep pace with the complexity and immediacy of the financial world, integrating tools, data, and decision-making frameworks that mirror contemporary industry practice.

Amrut Mody School of Management has responded to this shift by integrating Bloomberg Terminals into its academic infrastructure, enabling students, researchers, and entrepreneurs to work with live financial markets, macroeconomic indicators, global development data, and policy insights. Housed in a dedicated Bloomberg Lab on campus, this environment enhances experiential learning, deepens research capabilities, and strengthens industry preparedness across the Ahmedabad University’s academic ecosystem.

The Lab serves as a shared resource across multiple programmes, including the Master of Science in Quantitative Finance, the Master of Science in Economics, the Master of Business Administration, and the Bachelor of Science in Management (Honours). It is currently equipped with 12 Bloomberg Terminals, providing access to live global data, analytics, and financial modelling tools. The capacity can be expanded as academic and research demand grows, ensuring continued access across disciplines.

Professor Shobha Das, Dean of Amrut Mody School of Management, said, “The Bloomberg Lab is part of our broader effort to build a rigorous and interconnected academic environment where students engage deeply with the world they will step into. It brings together our strengths in economics, finance, management, data science, and entrepreneurship to offer a truly integrated educational experience.”

A key part of this academic ecosystem is the GIFT International Fintech Institute (GIFT IFI), an initiative anchored by Ahmedabad University in collaboration with IIT Gandhinagar, the University of California San Diego, and GIFT City. The Institute specialises in the emerging fintech domain, offering programmes that integrate finance, technology, and regulatory thinking. With its strong industry alignment and focus on applied learning, GIFT IFI plays a distinct role in advancing fintech education. The Bloomberg Lab adds significant capacity to this effort, allowing students to engage with global financial tools and real-time datasets. This integration further enriches the academic environment by connecting fintech education with live market practice.

The Lab also marks a significant advancement in how economics and management are taught at the postgraduate level. Ahmedabad University is among the first institutions in India where students of a Master’s in Economics programme have direct access to high-frequency, cross-country datasets on macroeconomic indicators, bond yields, exchange rates, and central bank policies. This hands-on access elevates coursework, thesis research, and applied modelling exercises, supporting the development of globally aware, data-driven economists prepared for careers in public policy, consulting, finance, and research.

Similarly, MBA students benefit from Bloomberg’s analytics to understand capital markets, risk management, corporate finance decisions, and portfolio strategies. These tools are embedded into case-based and experiential pedagogy, fostering analytical rigour and real-world application.

Beyond the classroom, the Lab also supports student entrepreneurs at VentureStudio, Ahmedabad University’s startup incubation centre. These founders can leverage Bloomberg’s data and analytics to assess markets, validate business models, explore investment trends, and design data-driven growth strategies. Whether evaluating sector benchmarks or global valuations, startup teams gain a powerful research and planning tool that strengthens innovation with evidence.

This integration supports a more engaged, data-literate student and startup community, preparing graduates and founders to navigate and contribute to the evolving landscape of finance, policy, business, and innovation.
