Patterns of women’s work participation in Indian states and the relation between work and education are discussed. Higher secondary education is a threshold required for entry into good jobs. We observe differences in levels of education and informality in India and China. While increasing returns to private investments in higher levels of education exist in India and China, education appears to be a good proxy for skill and ability in China, but not so in India.
