John von Neumann built the first digital computer in 1945. Rather than concentrating on the military applications in the second world war which led to this, I present a selection of the mathematical ideas across millenia which led to this development, and continue till the end of the 20th century.

About the speaker: Kamal Lodaya is a Professor with Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Chennai. He works in the area of Theoretical Computer Science. He did his schooling from Ahmedabad and went to BITS Pilani and TIFR Mumbai for his further studies. His research areas include Logic, Automata, Petri nets and Concurrency.
