Roles of Materials in Prospering Energy Storage

Dr. Farheen N. Sayed
School of Engineering and Applied Science

ABSTRACT

The increasing rate of dwindling boundaries between Chemical Science and Engineering research could be easily credited to the marvellous role of materials. The demands of materials for the progressive benefit includes spotting the exclusive material characteristic required, and development for its practical application. With the formidable demand of renewable energy sources, affordable and efficient energy storage is entailed. Off-hours demand of energy could be achieved while utilizing energy storage units in between, making energy harnessing more viable. The progress thus far suggests the stronghold of Li-ion battery for next few years. Improved material properties of the materials in Li ion battery, namely in cathode, anode and electrolyte is highly necessitated for better performance and higher safety. In view of the different targeted applications, materials need to be tuned and modified. The quest for a better Li-ion battery includes high energy, safety and economical, which has led to the research in high voltage cathode, better ionic as well electronic conducting material along with solid-state electrolyte. The current research progress and future direction will be highlighted in the presentation, with the focus on researched materials for higher energy and non-ambient condition operation of lithium-ion battery.

BIOGRAPHY
Dr Sayed obtained her M. Sc. degree (Chemistry) from the Institute of Science, Mumbai, with first-class first. Subsequently, she was selected as JRF in 2008 under the prestigious Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC)-Mumbai University collaboration scheme for pursuing her Ph. D. work at BARC. She worked under the supervision of Dr A. K. Tyagi for five years for her doctoral work. The focus of her work was to synthesize energy-related materials, focusing on materials such as ionic conductors (electrolytes), photo-catalysts, multiferroic materials and rare-earth-based optical materials. Soon after submission of her thesis she had worked with Prof. Vivek Polshettiwar in Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) for nearly a year focus being synthesis of nanomaterials for energy application. In 2015 she had been awarded the prestigious Nehru-Fulbright fellowship award to further research in the energy related filed, i.e. energy storage in secondary Li-ion batteries. With the Nehru-Fulbright Fellowship, she worked with Prof. P. M. Ajayan at Rice University from 2015 to 2017. Currently she is INSPIRE Faculty at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. Her keen interests involve structural aspects of materials along with electrochemistry. The focus of her research work comprises of materials to make more energetic, powerful and safer Li-ion as well as other rechargeable energy storage devices.
