Challenge based learning, 21st century employability and the experiences of the Social Impact Lab

Dr. Pathik Pathak
School of Engineering and Applied Science

ABSTRACT

In this talk Dr Pathik Pathak will outline the principles of challenge-based learning (CBL), how it answers the needs of the 21st century economy and higher education. CBL sits at the intersection of project, problem-based and service learning, merging the principles of “T-shaped leadership” (Brown, 2005) with the graduate capital model as an evaluative framework (Tomlinson, 2017,2020). He will also explain how CBL informs the work of the University of Southampton Social Impact Lab and our current portfolio of activities.

About the Speaker: Dr Pathik Pathak (SFHEA, FRSA, PHD, Warwick) is Associate Professor of Social Entrepreneurship and Director of the Social Impact Lab at the University of Southampton. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He is also a TEDx speaker, a World Economic Forum agenda shaper, and an UNESCO Inclusive Policy Lab Expert.

His research and enterprise portfolio includes work on post- growth urban social innovation and social enterprise in low and middle-income countries. His work, in collaboration with many others, has been funded by the ESRC, Innovate UK, The British Council, UKIERI and the National Institute of Health Research. As Founding Director of the multi-award-winning Social Impact Lab, he leads the University’s international work on social impact.

In recent years its work has been recognized by the Guardian University Awards, the Ashoka-Cordes Awards, and the Unltd- HEFCE awards. As a result of his work in higher education, he has been made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2014 and was awarded the Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Samann in 2015 for outstanding contributions to education. He was named one of the top 5 digital leaders by the Asians in Tech Award in 2016, was runner-up in the Sociological Review Prize for Outstanding Scholarship in 2016, was named a World Economic Forum agenda shaper in 2017 and was runner-up in the “Best in Education” category at the British Asian Awards in 2018.
