Impact of heat treatment and acid leaching time on preparation of porous walled hollow glass microspheres (PWHGMs)

ABSTRACT

Successful design and synthesis of PWHGMs from hollow glass microspheres; Pore size variation with heat treatment temperature and acid leach time; PWHGMs as additives in lead-acid batteries and Li-ion batteries.

Description

  • The main objective of this study is to prepare porous walled hollow glass microspheres with acceptable quality and investigate the effect of heat treatment temperature and acid leaching (time/concentration) on porosity characteristic of HGMs wall. 
  • The first group of experiments carried out to determine the impact of heat treatment temperature and time on preparation of PWHGMs by using commercially available starting hollow glass bubbles (K15) from 3MTM. Approximately 3 g of HGMs will be heat treated at 500, 550 and 600°C for 4, 8 and 24h. The heat-treated HGMs are then characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and FTIR. 
  • Characterization on feed was done by using FESEM, ESEM, FTIR and XRD. 
  • The protocol of synthesis of porous microspheres using K15 HGMs is given below
