Vinod Kumar Mall, Visiting Professor | Ahmedabad University

Vinod Kumar Mall

Visiting Professor

PhD (Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology,Gandhinagar)

[email protected]

Research Interests: Digital image forensics

Profile

Professor Vinod Kumar Mall earned PhD from DAIICT in 2015 on “Detection of Tampering in Digital Images Using Feature Based Hash Generation”.  His previous stints with academia include his role as Visiting Faculty to IIIT, Gandhinagar to teach a course on Digital Forensics and as Visiting Faculty to Central Gujarat University to teach a course on issues relating to national security.

Professor Vinod Kumar Mall has served in the Indian police service for 35 years at various important leadership positions, culminating in his role at the apex rank of Director General of Police. During his service, he has also worked as a Director at the National Security Council Secretariat, Government of India. He joined the Indian Police Service in 1986 after completing his BTech from IIT (BHU), Varanasi in 1984 He has given a number of lectures to students at various universities on a wide range of subjects. He is a recipient of the Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President Police Medal for Distinguished Service. He superannuated at the apex rank of Director General of Police. In addition to this, he has been leading a socio-cultural movement called Buddha Se Kabir Tak for the last three years.
During his career, he has enabled many technological upgradation programmes for the Gujarat Police such as CSITMS (City Surveillance & Integrated Traffic Management System), eGujCop (a comprehensive computerisation programme) and Safe & Secure Gujarat. He has a keen interest in technological innovations which impact society at large.

In his free time, Professor Mall can be found playing tennis, reading up on philosophies of the world or listening to old Hindi music.

Research

Details of research undertaken

  • Detection of tampering in digital images using watermarking and hash generation techniques.
  • Quantifying and defining the amount of tampering in digital images.
  • Defining a first-of-its-kind Comprehensive Image Index to detect tampering of multiple types in a single image. Use of Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) for modelling structural features of the image and using it for tampering detection.
  • Use of discrete wavelet transforms for detection and localization of tampering in medical images.
  • Application of Canny Edge detector to pick up structural content of the image, converting it into Edge Index and using it for detection of tampering in images.
  • Detection and localization of copy-move tampering using features of locality preserving projection.
