Professor Gonsalves has more than 36 years of experience in academia including over 20 years at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, and two years at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA. He was the Founding Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi, where he served for 10 years. At IIT Madras, he also served as Head of Department, Computer Science and Engineering. Professor Gonsalves earned his PhD from Stanford University in 1986, his MS from Rice University in 1979, and his BTech from IIT Madras in 1976, all in Electrical Engineering.
During his tenure at IIT Madras he was a co-founder of the TeNeT group, and helped IIT alumni-led companies like Midas Communications and Banyan Networks. In a pioneering move, he founded Nilgiri Networks, Ooty, for telecom software development in a small town. He has been consultant to the State Bank of India for development and research in banking technologies, and has executed projects on Smart Agriculture to take technology benefits to farmers. He has served on several committees including one on increasing the number of girls in STEM programmes. Besides bringing up a greenfield IIT at Mandi, he was instrumental in several innovations in education, notably, a strong interdisciplinary curriculum, several innovative courses on design and innovation with extensive hands-on activities, and novel pedagogies.
