Research Interests: Manufacturing processes, Friction-based manufacturing, Additive manufacturing

Profile

Professor Shuja Ahmed is an Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering and Applied Science of Ahmedabad University. Before joining Ahmedabad University, Professor Ahmed worked as a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, India. He earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering (with manufacturing as the area of specialisation) from Indian Institute of Technology Patna, India. Before his doctorate, he completed his BTech (Distinction) in Mechanical Engineering from Magadh University, Bodh Gaya, India.

Professor Ahmed’s research interests are in the advanced manufacturing processes focused on friction-based manufacturing/processing such as friction stir welding/processing, friction stir spot welding, friction stir additive manufacturing, and rotary friction welding, among others. From his research work, he has consistently published papers in high-impact journals and reputed conferences. He also serves as a reviewer for some famous journals in the field of manufacturing engineering, such as the Journal of Engineering Manufacture, High Temperature Materials and Processes, and others.

Research

Ongoing research

  • Characteristics of heat-assisted rotary friction welding
  • Modification of the sprayed surface by friction stir processing
  • Friction stir additive manufacturing – tool design and its performance
  • Fused deposition modeling – build strength improvement

Completed research

  • Development of fixture for micro-friction stir welding (micro-FSW) of aluminium alloy sheets
  • On process parameters and associated deformation conditions during micro-FSW
  • On triple-spiral micro-grooves on tool-shoulder end-surface and its effect on process responses during micro-FSW.

Future research

Open to collaboration on interdisciplinary research work that clubs my research interests with research topics including, but not limited to, the areas of biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, tribology, sustainable engineering, artificial intelligence (machine learning).
