Musical Traditions of India – An Introduction for Engineering and Business Students
Professor Chitra Srikrishna, who as a faculty of School of Arts and Sciences, Ahmedabad University has created a music appreciation course for Ahmedabad University. She has designed a curriculum that has not just been enriching but raised many questions as well. What role does music play in creating social change, should it be part of everyone’s academic curriculum and to what end? Is this an opportunity to extend the music, particularly classical and folk, beyond their regional niches to a wider audience and how do non-music students balance their personal and professional interests?
To widen the melodic understanding and the boundaries, Professor Chitra Srikrishna also brought in a variety of guest speakers such as Shubha Mudgal (vocalist), Nirmala Rajashekar (vainika) and Vinod Seetharaman (mridangist) to address the classes.
