Industrial Visit to RBD Engineers to Understand Products, Processes, and Challenges in Operations
The School of Engineering and Applied Science organised an Industrial Visit to RBD Engineers, Gandhinagar, in February 2019 for students in the second year of Mechanical Engineering. The students were accompanied by Varadharajan Iyer, Professor, School of Engineering and Applied Science, and Teaching Assistant Vidit Ghelani. Students interacted with Sanjay Desai, CEO of RBD Engineers, discussing their products, processes, and challenges in operations. The tour started with a visit to their foundry, where students observed induction furnaces, cupola furnaces, mould making, raw material melting, molten metal pouring, and the mould sand retreatment plant. The processes were explained to the students in detail by the instructor. Students also visited their laboratories, where they test mould properties and where final casting material properties are tested, and the in-house machining shop with shot blasting, CNC, and VMC machines. The visit concluded with a Q&A session with CEO Sanjay Desai, who offered students an opportunity to do a summer internship or a project at the foundry to expand their theoretical and practical knowledge.
