The IEEE student branch of Ahmedabad University was glad to hold an android workshop for managers, designers and non-IT professionals. We the members of IEEE believe that technology is meant for everyone including a professional who hails from a non-technical background. Keeping this in mind, Shashwat and Rahul along with the other members put in painstaking efforts to design a one of a kind android workshop that uses no coding at all. The workshop was beautifully designed to serve the exact purpose. The goal was to make the professionals skilled enough so that they can give wings to their diverse ideas.
It was a full day interactive workshop. We were extremely glad to see the enthusiastic response we received. In spite of the rains, we got 50 students who came around excited and eager to learn. Shashwat Sanghavi and Rahul Patel conducted a fun, novel and easy to understand workshop. The day started with tea at 9:00 AM. After these tea and registration process, the workshop started on the time at 10:00 AM. As most of the participants are from the non-IT background, the workshop was started with basic concepts about programming. This session was taken by Mr Rahul Patel (IEEE student branch technical committee head and the student of SEAS ). After that, the workshop was continued by Mr Shashwat Sanghavi (IEEE student branch chair and SEAS student) who delivered the knowledge on android app development using MIT app inventor. Different kinds of applications were shown and then a step by step tutorial to make the same was explained. The students learnt everything from making a simple “Hello World” application to working with sensors like accelerometer and making calculators. Delicious lunch was served at 1:30 pm to keep the participants charged. The best part of the workshop was its fun loving and enthusiastic environment created by the volunteers.
After the workshop, the participants made teams of three and came up with interesting applications. All of them were given a chance to present. They were evaluated for their ideas, application design and the overall complete application. The best two were given prizes. Since all of the participants were new to this kind of subject, they were allowed to seek as much help that they want to develop an app of their dream. The time of the workshop was extended to 6:00 PM from 4:30 PM on demand of the participants. The participants then went home happily munching on their ice creams. They all were eager to participate in many more such workshops. We got wonderful feedback that has only encouraged us to serve this beautiful society that we live in. Also, our dedicated volunteers deserve special mention as they served selflessly to make this workshop extremely memorable. With this event, we succeeded in attracting students from other institutes to SEAS as in this workshop there were only 5 students from SEAS and others were from NID, CEPT, NIRMA, PDPU and many other.
