Ahmedabad-Manchester Cotton Exchange: A material Response Exhibition
The Centre for Heritage Management, Ahmedabad University celebrated World Heritage Day on April 18 by organizing a shared memory walk through a series of artists’ installations, textiles, ceramics, photography, film reflecting on the connected heritage of Ahmedabad & Manchester. The project was an exploration of the heritage of the cotton industry and the links between Lancashire and Manchester in the UK and Ahmedabad and Gujarat in India.
For the 5-day event, the Old Rajnagar Mill Campus was revived with its old mill site, the silent looms and the partially abandoned spaces telling of their own part in the cotton industry story in India. Exhibition and Mill walk was made possible through a partnership between Centre for Heritage Management, Ahmedabad University and Manchester Institute for Research in Art and Design, Manchester School of Art at Manchester Metropolitan University.
